Women's Tennis Defeats Bridgewater State in 5-4 Thriller

HOLDEN, Mass. - Sophomore Victoria Konicki (Auburn, Mass.) won the deciding third set at sixth singles to clinch a 5-4 victory for the Worcester State University tennis team over Bridgewater State on Saturday afternoon in Little East Conference action at Wachusett Regional High School.

The win moves the Lancers to 2-2 overall on the season, and 1-0 in the Little East. The Bears drop to 1-3 and 0-1 in the Little East.

Konicki's win capped a topsy-turvy, back-and-forth day between the Lancers and Bears that saw both teams hold the lead.

The first point of the day belonged to the Bears, who picked up the win at third doubles. Sophomore Olivia Sweeney (Taunton, Mass.) and freshman Vanessa Rosa (Taunton, Mass.) picked up the point for Bridgewater, defeating freshmen Emily Costa (Dudley, Mass.) and Abbey Tavares (Berkley, Mass.) 8-0. The Lancers would come out of doubles play in the lead however, as Charlotte Mullane (Sterling, Mass.) and Emma Collings (Marion, Mass.) combined for the 8-3 win at second doubles, and Dominique Alves (Ludlow, Mass.) and Monika Mularski (Auburn, Mass.) got the 8-4 win at first doubles for the Lancers.

After Mullane won handly at third singles to stretch the Lancer lead to 3-1, the Bears were able to level the score with wins from Rosa and junior Angelique Gray (Osterville, Mass.) at fifth and fourth singles, respectively. Alves and Sweeney won their matches for their teams in the first and second singles positions, forcing the sixth singles match to a winner-take-all scenario, but Konicki would have the upper hand. She defeated Bridgewater State senior Emily McGrath (Dartmouth, Mass.) 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 to clinch the victory for the Lancers.

Next up for Worcester State, they will travel north to take on Castleton on Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. The Bears will be back in action the same day, traveling to UMass Boston.
