Women's Tennis Defeated by UMass Dartmouth

HOLDEN, Mass. - Freshman Charlotte Mullane (Sterling, Mass.) picked up a pair of wins, but it wasn't enough as the Worcester State University tennis team suffered a 6-3 defeat to UMass Dartmouth in Little East Conference action at Wachusett Regional High School on Saturday.

With the loss, the Lancers fall to 3-3 overall on the season, and suffer their first LEC loss of the year, falling to 2-1. The Corsairs improve to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the LEC.

Mullane's win at second doubles, alongside teammate Emma Collings (Marion, Mass.) opened up the date, as they defeated UMass Dartmouth's Monika Reining (Linsengericht, Germany) and Rachel Aftandilian (Watertown, Mass.) by a score of 8-0. The Corsairs would respond however, picking up victories at first and third doubles to carry the 2-1 edge into singles play.

The first four singles matches to finish all went the way of the Corsairs, giving the victory to the visitors. The match was clinched by a win at number two singles by UMass Dartmouth's Jaime Fastino (Rehoboth, Mass.), who defeated Worcester's Monika Mularski (Auburn, Mass.) 6-3, 6-2. Mullane and sophomore Dominique Alves (Ludlow, Mass.) won in third set tie breaks for the Lancers to round out singles play, but the wins proved too little too late.

Next up for the Lancers, they'll return to the court on Thursday for a 3:30 start against Roger Williams. The Corsairs will look to win their fourth straight match when they take on St. Joseph (Conn.) on the road on Tuesday.
