BOSTON, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's tennis team snapped a brief two-match losing skid on Saturday afternoon, defeating UMass Boston 8-1 in Little East Conference play at the BC High Tennis Courts.
With the win, the Lancers improve to 4-4 overall and 3-1 in the Little East.
The Lancers opened up the day with three strong showings in doubles play to take a commanding 3-0 lead into singles. At first singles, sophomores Dominique Alves (Ludlow, Mass.) and Monika Mularski (Auburn, Mass.) were victorious by a margin of 9-8 (10-8 in the tie-break), with Charlotte Mullane (Sterling, Mass.) and Emma Collings (Marion, Mass.) winning 9-7 at second doubles. Freshman Emily Hamparian (Belchertown, Mass.) recorded her first collegiate win for the Lancers at third doubles, pairing up with Elizabeth Strycharz (Blackstone, Mass.) for the 8-4 win.
The Lancers continued to control the play once singles got underway. Freshman Emily Costa (Dudley, Mass.) recorded a win at fifth singles after her Beacon opponent was forced to retire, setting up Mullane to clinch the match for Worcester State with a 6-0, 6-1 win at third singles. Alves, Mularski, and Collings were all also victorious in singles play before UMass Boston clinched their lone point of the match with a tie-break win in the sixth position.
Next up for the Lancers, they will travel to Southern Maine on Tuesday for a Little East matchup against the Huskies starting at 4 p.m.
