Tennis Grabs Little East Victory over Western Connecticut

HOLDEN, Mass. - Freshman Charlotte Mullane (Sterling, Mass.) and sophomore Emma Collings (Marion, Mass.) each picked up wins in both singles and doubles play on Friday afternoon as the Worcester State University tennis team defeated Western Connecticut State 7-2 in Little East Conference play at Wachusett Regional High School.

With the win, the Lancers improve to 5-5 and 4-2 in the Little East. The Colonials fall to 1-9 and 1-5 in the conference.

Mullane and Collings paired up at second doubles to give the Lancers the first point of the day with a convincing 8-2 win. At third doubles, freshmen Elizabeth Strycharz (Blackstone, Mass.) and Emily Hamparian (Belchertown, Mass.) guaranteed the hosts would go into singles play with the advantage, picking up an 8-5 victory. The Colonials prevented the doubles sweep from the first doubles position however, as Emma Chapman (Danbury, Conn.) and Carole Allers (Wilton, Conn.) bested Worcester State's Dominique Alves (Ludlow, Mass.) and Monika Mularski (Auburn, Mass.) 8-5.

The Lancers won the first five matches to open singles play to secure the win. After wins from Emily Costa (Dudley, Mass.) and Mullane at fifth and third singles respectively, Victoria Konicki (Auburn, Mass.) secured the Lancer win at sixth singles with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Chelsie Von Elm (Somers, N.Y.). Collings and Alves also picked up wins in singles play for the Lancers.

Allers got the lone singles point for Western Connecticut, defeating Mularski 6-2, 6-4 from the number two position.

Next up for the Lancers, they'll turn right back around with a road trip to Plymouth State on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Colonials are at Southern Maine, also on Saturday, when they next take to the court.
