Konicki Clinches Dramatic 5-4 Win for Tennis

WORCESTER, Mass. - Sophomore Victoria Konicki (Auburn, Mass.) clinched a victory at sixth singles for the Worcester State University tennis team as the Lancers defeated Clark University 5-4 Tuesday afternoon at the Coresh Tennis Courts.

With the win, the Lancers improve to 6-6, while the Cougars fall to 2-5.

The Cougars took a 2-1 lead into singles play after picking up victories at first and third doubles. Freshman Charlotte Mullane (Sterling, Mass.) and sophomore Emma Collings (Marion, Mass.) extended their doubles winning streak to double digits, with win number 10 in a row. They won at second doubles 8-1 for the victory. 

The Lancers turned it on in time for singles play to pull off the comeback. Worcester State won the first three singles matches, as sophomore Dominique Alves (Ludlow, Mass.) won at first singles, and Mullane and Collings won at third and fourth singles respectively to put the visitors ahead 4-2. After Clark won at second and fifth singles to level the match, Konicki picked up the win in the third set, securing a 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 victory.

Next up for the Lancers, they will play on Thursday at home against Rhode Island College at Wachusett Regional High School.
