Women's Tennis Victorious in Little East Opener

GORHAM, Maine - The Worcester State University women's tennis team opened up Little East Conference play with a win on Saturday afternoon, defeating the University of Southern Maine 9-0.

With the win, Worcester State improves to 2-2 overall on the season and 1-0 in the LEC. Southern Maine drops to 1-1 and 0-1 in conference play.

Junior Dominique Alves (Ludlow, Mass.) and senior Lauren Taylor (Attleboro, Mass.) got the day started off right for Worcester State, recording an 8-2 win at first doubles. The Lancers would go on to sweep doubles play to take a 3-0 lead into singles. 

Alves also got the Lancers going in singles play, pushing the Huskies to the brink with a win at first singles. Sophomore Emily Costa (Dudley, Mass.) gave the Lancers the deciding point at sixth singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win, clinching the victory for the visitors. Taylor, Emma Collings (Marion, Mass.), Monika Mularski (Auburn, Mass.), and Victoria Konicki (Auburn, Mass.) were all also victorious in singles play for the Lancers en route to the sweep.

Worcester State returns to the courts on Thursday to play a non-conference matchup against MCLA. First serves from North Adams are scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
