Women's Tennis Defeats Salem State in Home Opener

HOLDEN, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's tennis team claimed a victory in its home opener Saturday afternoon, beating Salem State 6-3 in Little East Conference action at Wachusett Regional High School.

With the win, Worcester State jumps above .500 to 4-3 on the season, and to 2-1 in the LEC. Salem State falls to 1-2, all in the LEC.

Worcester State hopped in front after doubles play, winning at both second and third doubles. Senior Lauren Taylor (Attleboro, Mass.) and sophomore Emily Costa (Dudley, Mass.) got the first Lancer point of the day with an 8-1 win in the second position, followed by an 8-5 win at third doubles from Monika Mularski (Auburn, Mass.) and Bekah Riley (Ellington, Conn.).

Worcester State continued to roll in singles play to secure the league win. Junior Emma Collings (Marion, Mass.) surgically took care of business at second singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win to get the Lancers off and running. The clinching match came at third singles, where Mularski came away with a 6-2, 6-3 win. Charlotte Mullane (Sterling, Mass.) and Victoria Konicki (Auburn, Mass.) both won in singles play to lift Worcester State.

Salem's two singles win both came in 10-point tie breaks, as Anastasia Startseva won at first singles, and Alexandria Floyd at fifth singles for the Vikings.

Worcester State will look to extend its win streak to three with a road trip to Western Connecticut State on Tuesday. First serves are slated for 3:30 p.m.
