Women's Tennis Topples Castleton

HOLDEN, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's tennis team made quick work of Castleton University Thursday afternoon, defeating the Spartans 9-0 in Little East Conference action at Wachusett Regional High School.

With the win, Worcester State improves to 6-4 overall this season and 4-2 in the Little East. Castleton falls to 2-8 overall and 0-6 in conference play.

Worcester State went into singles play with a 3-0 advantage after a dominating performance in doubles. Sophomore Charlotte Mullane (Sterling, Mass.) and junior Emma Collings (Marion, Mass.) got things started with an 8-0 win from the first position, followed by an 8-1 win from Lauren Taylor (Attleboro, Mass.) and Emily Costa (Dudley, Mass.) at the number two position. Bekah Riley (Ellington, Conn.) and Monika Mularski (Auburn, Mass.) capped off doubles for Worcester State with an 8-3 victory at third doubles.

The Lancers didn't skip a beat once singles play got started, as Mullane won her match 6-2, 6-0 at third singles to push the Spartans to the brink. Moments later, Costa got the clinching point for Worcester State with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the four position. Riley, playing in her first collegiate singles match, Taylor, Mularski, and Victoria Konicki (Auburn, Mass.) were all also winners in singles for the Lancers.

Worcester State will be back in action immediately, as they travel to St. John's Prep to take on Emerson on Friday. First serves in doubles play are scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
