DANVERS, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's tennis team won its second match in as many days on Friday afternoon, defeating Emerson College 6-3 in non-conference action at St. John's Preparatory School.
With the win, Worcester State improves to 7-4 overall on the season, surpassing its win total of six from the 2018-19 season.
Worcester State was red hot out of the gate, with three doubles wins to take a commanding 3-0 lead. Juniors Monika Mularski (Auburn, Mass.) and Bekah Riley (Ellington, Conn.) got things started with an 8-3 win at third doubles to put the Lancers in front 1-0. The pairings of Charlotte Mullane (Sterling, Mass.) and Emma Collings (Marion, Mass.) and Lauren Taylor (Attleboro, Mass.) and Emily Costa (Dudley, Mass.) both won 8-5 at first and second doubles respectively to give the visitors the big lead.
The Lancers and Lions split the singles matches with three wins apiece, but Worcester's dominant play in doubles was enough to clinch the victory. Mullane and Riley both won in straight sets for Worcester State, while Costa came from behind to win 5-7, 6-0, 7-5 at fourth singles.
The Lancers will look for their third win in as many days when they return to action for a Little East Conference contest against Bridgewater State on Saturday. First serves from Wachusett Regional High School are set for 12 p.m.
