MEDFORD, Mass. - Senior Anthony Christo (Peabody, Mass.) won the men's weight throw, junior Abigail MacGregor (Salem, N.H.) won the women's 60 meter dash, and sophomore Bernice Mensah (Worcester, Mass.) won the women's long jump as the Worcester State University men's and women's indoor track & field teams competed in the Branwen Smith-King Invitational Saturday afternoon at Tufts University's Gantcher Center.
Mensah not only won the women's long jump with a distance of 5.32 meters, but the sophomore also finished in fourth place in the triple jump on Saturday with a distance of 10.61 meters.
MacGregor's performance in the 60 meter dash, a huge P.R. of 8.05, was good enough to qualify the junior for the New England Championships. MacGregor was also the first leg of the women's 4x200 meter relay on Saturday which finished in sixth place with a time of 1:51.22. Joining MacGregor on the relay team were sophomores Amanda Turner (Windham, Maine) and Emily Finnegan (Ashland, Mass.) and junior Courtney Guay (Londonderry, N.H.).
The women's 4x800 meter relay team also had a strong showing on Saturday, placing fourth with a time of 10:42.30. Junior Elisabeth Olson (Wilmington, Mass.), freshman Ryann Molinari (Grafton, Mass.), sophomore Kyra Siano (North Attleboro, Mass.), and Guay comprised the fourth-place finishers.
On the men's side, Christo and senior Marcus Vieira (Peabody, Mass.) combined for the one-two punch in the men's weight throw, finishing first and second overall, respectively. Christo's 17.07 meter heave was just enough to edge out Vieira's throw of 16.97 meters. Junior Eddy Acuna (Newton, Mass.) was the third place finisher in the men's shot put on the day with a throw of 14.86 meters, with Vieira finishing fourth with a throw of 14.38 meters.
After winning the 60 meter dash in the Friday session of the heptathlon last night, freshman Andre Luciano (Milford, Mass.) completed the heptathlon in fifth place Saturday with 3,974 points. Senior Scott Page (Winchendon, Mass.), competing for the first time since setting the new school record last weekend, finished in sixth place in the pole vault with a height of 4.25 meters on the day. Senior Ryan Connolly (Braintree, Mass.) was the leading Lancer jumper on the afternoon, finishing in seventh place in the triple jump with a distance of 12.75 meters.
On the track, the men's 4x800 meter relay team, like their women's counterparts, finished in fourth place on Saturday with a time of 8:53.55. Making up the relay team were freshmen Patrick Carleton (Tewksbury, Mass.), Drew Fottler (Chelmsford, Mass.), and Colin Brennan (Newbury, Mass.) and senior Joe Grider (Hopedale, Mass.).
Both the men's and women's indoor track & field teams will be back in action on Friday for the first of two days at the NEICAAA Championships at Boston's Reggie Lewis Center.
