Indoor Track & Field Competes in Branwen Smith-King Invitational

MEDFORD, Mass. - The Worcester State University men's and women's indoor track & field teams competed Saturday at Tufts University's Branwen Smith-King Invitational.

The women's team finished in sixth place out of 22 teams competing, while the men's team placed 16th.

The highlight of the day came in the women's 60 meter dash, which saw freshman Maureen Grady (Douglas, Mass.) cross the line in first place with a time of 7.92 seconds. Grady, who also finished fifth in the long jump on the day at 4.88 meters, was one of four Lancers to reach the final in the 60 meter dash. Senior Abigail MacGregor (Salem, N.H.) finished third, freshman Elena Pellegrini (Ashland, Mass.) finished sixth, and freshman Brooke Barriss (Melrose, Mass.) finished seventh in the event.

In the 200 meter dash, freshman Avonia Herbert (Sharon, Mass.) was the top Lancer, placing fourth overall with a time of 26.70 seconds. Pellegrini and MacGregor finished sixth and seventh in the event respectively. In field events, freshman Odelia Konadu (Worcester, Mass.) placed third overall in the shot put with a heave of 11.55 meters, while junior Bernice Mensah (Worcester, Mass.) was the fifth place finisher in the triple jump at 10.70 meters.

On the men's side, senior Eddy Acuna (Newton, Mass.) turned in the day's top performance for Worcester State, placing second overall in the shot put with a toss of 14.53 meters. In the weight throw, sophomore Dariel Canela (Peabody, Mass.) placed 14th with a throw of 13.80 meters. On the track, senior Michael Butten (Marblehead, Mass.) reached the semifinals of the 60 meter dash, where he placed 19th with a sprint of 7.51 seconds.

The Lancers will be off next weekend before competing for the MASCAC Championship at Smith College on February 15.
