North Dartmouth, MA --- Freshman Leah Walczak (Whitinsville, MA) captured a pair of top finishes in the high jump (1.45 meters) and the 400 meter dash (1:00.44) to help lead the Worcester State women’s outdoor track and field team to a first place finish at the UMass Dartmouth Corsair Invitational.
The Lancers took the best spot with 195 points followed by the host Corsairs (120), Roger Williams (118) and Bridgewater State (78).
Sophomore Mercedes Arnold (Mira Loma, CA) continued her outstanding season with a first place finish in the long jump (4.90m) and second in the triple jump (10.35m) before junior Andrea Ouellette (Salisbury, MA) added first in the triple jump (10.43m), fourth in the long jump (4.32m) fourth in the 400 (1:04.94) and sixth in the 100 meter hurdles (17.26).
Both relay teams took home first place finishes in the 4x100 (50.32) and the 4x400 (4:13.82) relay’s.
Freshman Rose Matheiu (Somerville, MA) also recorded second in the long jump (4.46m), sixth in the triple jump (9.74m) as classmate Steph Muse (Chelmsford, MA) notched second in the 100 meter hurdles (16.44) and fifth in the 400 meter hurdles (1:13.71). Sophomore Mara Kralian (N. Grafton, MA) also chipped in with a second place finish in the 100 (13.00).
First-year Erin Donohue (Saugus, MA) tallied second in the 1,500 (5:15.17) while junior Christina Bisbee (N. Attleboro, MA) tossed third in the hammer (34.34m) and 12th in the discus (20.05m). Freshman Kristen Brunelle (Dracut, MA) hurled fifth in the shot put (10.36m) and ninth in the discus as classmate Kaylee McElroy (Rutland, MA) placed fourth in the 100 meter hurdles (16.85), fifth in the javelin (32.85m), eighth in the 400 meter hurdles (1:16.38) and ninth in the shot put (9.39m).
Freshman Cathy Chude (Marlboro, MA) rounded out the field events by finishing seventh in the 100 meter hurdles (17.62) and eighth in the shot put (9.82m).
The distance corps were also paced by freshman Brittany Grueter’s (Foxboro, MA) and sophomore Meg Plant (Franklin, MA) who placed third (20:33.02) and fourth (20:39.93) in the 5,000, respectively, before Plant took the fifth best time in the 800 (2:33.38). Second-year Maura Withington (West Palm Beach, FL) finished her day in seventh in the 1,500 (5:18.67) and 11th in the 800 (2:38.01).
Sophomore Sarah Rafferty (Uxbridge, MA) helped lead the sprinters as she clocked third in the 200 (27.06) and seventh in the 100 (13.41) while freshman Alicia Ryan (N. Townsend, MA) was fourth in the 100 (13.24) and eighth in the 200 (28.47). First-year Natalie Marchi (Northbridge, MA) finished sixth in the 400 meter hurdles (1:14.20).
Next week the Lancers will compete at the Silfen Invitational hosted by Connecticut College before they compete at the MASCAC Championships in two Saturday’s.
