Women's Outdoor Track Wins Springfield Invitational

 

Women's Outdoor Track Slides Up To Ninth In USTFCCCA New England Regional Index

 

Springfield, MA --- Sophomore Emily Riehl (Trumbull, CT) and senior Megan Taylor (Danvers, MA) helped underscore seven first place finishes for Worcester State as the Lancers won the Springfield College Invitational this afternoon.

The Lancers tallied 159 points for a 40 point victory over the hosting Pride.

Reihl won the 400 meters (59.51) while Taylor took home first in the 400 meter hurdles (1:06.84) followed by senior Christy Deininger (N. Attleboro, MA) who claimed the top spot in the 100 meter hurdles (14.58) to move up into at tie for 12th in the NCAA Division III.

Deininger then anchored the winning 4x100 meter relay (49.53) which also included freshman Arianna Freeman (Brockton, MA) leading off, junior Brittany Hodgerney (Leicester, MA) second and classmate Alyssa Jasper (Rockland, MA) third.

Jasper was victorious in the javelin (133-3/40.61m), senior Hannah Werneth (N. Yarmouth, ME) took the top spot in the shot put (36-6.50/11.21) and sophomore Francesca Casasanta (Hopkinton, MA) placed first in the high jump (5-2.25/1.58m) to qualify for the ECAC Division III Championships.

Taylor, Deininger and Hodgerney along with freshman Danielle Cote (Dighton, MA) helped the Lancers eclipse new mark in the sprint medley relay (4:39.73) with third overall.

The previous record (4:53.5) had been set by Carrie Anthrop, Bonnie Olson, WSU Hall of Famer Elke Aun and Erica Pierce. The new mark was almost re-established nearly 21 years to the day (4/17/93).

For her efforts on the track and being apart of two relay's that scored points, Deininger was named the MASCAC Track Athlete of the Week for the third time this season.

Hodgerney was also third in the 200 (25.74) and fifth in the 100 (12.61) while sophomore Dalena Le (Worcester, MA/Doherty) was the runner-up in the 400 meter hurdles (1:08.73).

Junior Amanda Caldarone (Danvers, MA) had a leap of fourth in the long jump (17-5.50/5.32m) to stamp her ticket to the ECAC Championships as Casasanta placed fifth in the triple jump (35-3.75/10.76m) for a Division III New England standard.

Junior Hanna Carson (Natick, MA) was the runner-up in the shot put (36-9/11.20m) and Werneth wrapped up her meet with sixth in the discus (105-7/32.18m).

Freshman Erin McIntyre (Whitinsville, MA) and junior Cayla Leinonen (Spencer, MA) were fourth (4-9.75/1.47m) and fifth (4-9.75/1.47m) in the high jump, respectively, as Jasper was fifth in the shot put (36-7/11.15m) and eighth in the long jump (16-6/5.03m).

Third-year Shannon Trybus (Bondsville, MA) recorded fifth in the hammer (128-0/39.02m) and senior Marlene Christenson (Danvers, MA) was just behind in sixth (124-8/38.00m).

Sophomore Courtney Spinelli (Tewksbury, MA) finsihed sixth in the javelin (95-9/21.19m) as freshman Elizabeth McCormack (Gloucester, MA) added seventh in the discus (103-6/31.54m)

Junior Chelsey Peso (Uxbridge, MA) notched fifth in the 1,500 (5:17.21) followed by classmate Alexandria McMahon (E. Longmeadow, MA) who recorded sixth in the 400 meter hurdles (1:10.94).

Riehl added eighth in the 200 (26.42) as sophomore Maddison Benson (Attleboro, MA) and Caldarone were seventh (16.00) and eighth (16.08), respectively, in the 100 meter hurdles.

Worcester State returns to action next week at the MASCAC/New England Alliance Championships hosted by UMass Dartmouth.
