Worcester State’s Women’s Track & Field Team Noted for Academic Success

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Worcester State University's women's Track and Field team has been honored at a national level for their stellar academic performance, while individually Alyssa Jasper, was a recipient of a prestigious academic award.

The Worcester State University's Women's Track & Field team has been noted for the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Award for maintaining a 3.10 in the classroom for the 2014-15 season.

The Lancers' women's track team worked significantly off the track to maintain 3.30 team cumulative for the 2014-15 academic year.

"Our team is committed to excellence in both the classroom and on track," said head coach Andrea Ouellette. "There is certain balance between studies and practice that takes discipline. They do a great job of working just as hard in the classroom as they do in practice."

Individually, Alyssa Jasper was the lone U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic recipient. She participated in both the Indoor and Outdoor Division III Championships and had over a 3.30 GPA. This marks the fourth time in her career that Jasper has been distinguished with this award.

In addition to this award, she was recognized back in May 2015 with the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Female Scholar-Athlete Award. This award was given to both a male and female student-athlete who had excelled in academics and athletics while a student at a member of the MASCAC.

In the classroom, Jasper sports a 3.66 grade point average through the end of the spring 2015 semester. She walked across the stage in May with her degree in nursing and Jasper has plans to pursue a career as an emergency response nurse or critical care nurse in an intensive care unit.

"Alyssa fully commits to everything she engages in. She always wanted to be the best she could be, whether in the classroom or competing for Worcester State," said Ouellette. "She puts in a lot of hard work and dedication into not only her training, but her studies. She definitely set the example for our team this past year."
