Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Seniors Shine in Springfield College Classic

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Worcester State University women's track & field team grabbed sixth place at the Springfield College Classic on Saturday (Apr. 23), as two seniors marked first place finishes and qualified in their respective events.

 

"The girls stepped up and we had some terrific perfromances highlighted by Molly Downing who smashed the hammer school record," commented head coach Andrea Ouelltte.

 

Senior captain, Francesca Casasanta (Milford, Mass.) rolled in at the top for a first place finish in the women's high jump competition. She rang in 10 points for her team, and recorded a top height of 1.57m – good for Division III New England Championships. She also competed in the women's triple jump, coming in at 11th place.

 

Another senior, Hanna Carson (Natick, Mass.) claimed the top spot in the women's shot put for a top throw of 12.48m – qualifying for Division III New England Championships and ECAC's. She also scored in the discus throw, coming in at seventh place with a top throw of 31.30m.

 

Both Molly Downing (Dedham, Mass.) and Elizabeth McCormack (Gloucester, Mass.) qualified for Division III New England's in the hammer, as Downing marked the third spot for 46.74m – also good for ECAC Championships and breaking the school record! McCormack came in at 43.02 in the eighth hole. Megan Rouillard (Barrington, NH) earned the sixth spot in the javelin throw at 33.95m.

 

Emily Visconti (N. Reading, Mass.) marked a fourth place finish in the 100 Meter Run (12.89), while Nichole Tillery (Auburn, Mass.) came in just behind at sixth place (12.99). Dalena Le (Worcester, Mass.) marked a third place finish in the women's triple jump (10.62m) for a Division III New England qualifier, and came in fourth place in the 200 Meter Dash in a time of 26.51. Visconti chipped in a point for the Lancers as she marked an eighth place finish in the event. Freshman Mia Rogers (N. Dighton, Mass.) also chipped in one in the 1500 Meter Run with an eighth place finish in 5:00.23.

 

Abigail Danso (Worcester, Mass.) came in fourth in the 100 Meter Hurdles at 16.19, qualifying for Division III New England's in the event. Worcester's Rachel Lauzon (Carver, Mass.) came in eighth in the 400 Meter Hurdles at 1:13.46. Shayla Schoeneberger (Vernon, Conn.) gave the Lancers six points with her third place finish in the 3000 Meter Steeplechase (14:04.02).

 

This upcoming week, the Lancers will prepare for MASCAC Championships which will be held at UMass-Dartmouth next weekend (Apr. 30).
