For most college student-athletes, the student and athlete part of their college life is enough to keep them busy on campus. Stephanie McFadries of the Worcester State women's track and field team finds a way to balance five different roles on campus.
McFadries, a sophomore from Burlington, Mass., is currently majoring in biology. The ability to compete on a competitive team while also having time for school and friends was a big draw for McFadries to the campus.
Aside from her time as a biology student and a thrower from the track and field team, being a resident assistant is the most rewarding extra curricular she have ever been a part of. For McFardries, the opportunity to help so many residents with issues and problems is rewarding. She also works as an athlete mentor on campus which informs freshman student-athletes of different events on campus to keep them involved. Her final group is with the dental club. As an aspiring dental hygienist it is the perfect club for her.
While in her two years as a Division III student-athlete have taught her to be patient, be competitive, dedications and learn to live life to the fullest, it has also helped her learn to be a leader. Whether it is making sure to cheer for everyone or keeping up morale, McFadries knows that the team outcome is better than the overall one.
In her first season with the Lancers, McFadries qualified for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field National Championship in the javelin. She threw for a top distance of 40.04 meters for a 14th place finish. She will began her quest for a repeat trip to Nationals this past weekend at the Bridgewater State Invitational.
Even though she picked Worcester State to be away from home, it still was close enough for McFadries that her mom was nearby. Her mom provides her with a constant positive outlook while giving her unconditional love and support.
