Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Successful at Tufts Snowflake Classic

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Worcester State University women's outdoor track & field team had a successful second week of competition at the Tufts Snowflake Classic on Sunday (Apr. 2), as the team earned a ninth place finish (out of 22 teams) and was led by senior Abigail Danso (Worcester, Mass.) and sophomore Stephanie McFadries (Burlington, Mass.).

 

"We took full advantage of the better weather this weekend and had a lot of great performances this week," commented head coach Andrea Ouellette. "There were quite a number of personal records (PR's) and qualifiers as well."

 

Coming off of a win at last week's Bridgewater State meet, senior hurdler Danso, marked a 2nd place finish in the finals in a time of 15.90 (15.76 in the preliminaries), coming just short of Harvard's No. 1 hurdler who finished in a time of 15.41, and qualifying for Division III New England's. She also competed in the 100 Meter Dash, ranking 17th in the preliminaries out of 58 contestants (13.59)

 

Worcester State's sophomore javelin thrower, McFadries, tagged a 3rd place finish in the javelin throw, with a top throw of 39.80m. She was within a meter of the top thrower, Sahara Brown, of Southern New Hampshire. With her results, McFadries qualifies for not only Division III New England's, but All New England's. She currently is ranked 10th on the NCAA national list.

 

Also scoring in the throwing events was senior Elizabeth McCormack (Gloucester, Mass.), who participated in the shot put (9.58m), discus (31.2m), and hammer throw (39.08m). She came in 7th in the hammer throw to score three points for her team. Megan Rouillard (Barrington, N.H.) led the Lancers in the discus throw at 12th place (31.36m), while Carina Frontiero (Ispwich, Mass.) guided the team in the shot put (9.74m).

 

The sole Lancer to compete in the high jumps was rookie Haley Moss (Melrose, Mass.) who came in 6th at 1.58m, qualifying for Division III New England's. She is currently ranked 28th nationally with this week's result.  Abigail MacGregor (Salem, N.H.) participated in the long jump and placed 13th with a leap of 4.56m.

 

Guiding the team in the sprints was Rachel Stier (Mansfield, Mass.) who was the top Lancers to finish in both the 200 and 400 Meter Dash. She claimed 18th place out of 87 competitors in a time of 27.81 in the 200M, and then 7th place to score two team points in the 400M (1:01.91).

 

Lauren Waters (Mansfield, Mass.) was the top Lancers in the 100 Meter Dash preliminaries, tagging ninth place in a time of 13.42.

 

Danielle Bavoux (Medway, Mass.) came in 27th out of 68 runners in the 800 Meter Run (2:30.77), while Mia Rogers (N. Dighton, Mass.) earned the 34th spot in the 1500 Meter Run out of 76 participants.

 

In the longer distance events, Laura DelleChiaie (Haverhill, Mass.) and Justine Murdocca (Milford, Mass.) scored three points for their team in the 10000 Meter Run.

 

In the relays, Worcester State earned four team points in the 4x100 Meter relay as Haley Suarez (E. Taunton, Mass.), Stier, MacGregor, and Waters ran the legs. The team tagged eight points in the 4x800 Meter Relay as Kayla Corcoran (Lunenburg, Mass.), Rachel Lauzon (Carver, Mass.), Courtney Guay (Londonderry, N.H.), and Elisabeth Olson (Wilmington, Mass.) ran the relay.

 

"With the results from today, we are creating good momentum going into the rest of the season," concluded Ouellette.

 

This upcoming week, the Lancers travel to AIC for the Yellow Jacket Invitational, starting on Friday, April 7.
