FITCHBURG, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's outdoor track & field team won an impressive eight events on Saturday afternoon as they competed in the Jim Sheehan Invitational at Fitchburg State University.
Bernice Mensah (Worcester, Mass.) could not be stopped on the day, winning three individual events and serving as the anchor leg in the winning 4x100 meter relay team. Mensah won the long jump at 5.32 meters, the triple jump at 10.60 meters, and the 200 meter dash at 26.85 seconds. The 4x100 meter relay team, also consisting of Elena Pellegrini (Ashland, Mass.), Abigail MacGregor (Salem, N.H.), and Maureen Grady (Douglas, Mass.), won the event with a time of 49.67.
Also in the long jump, Grady finished in third place with a leap of 5.02 meters. In other field events, junior Riley Sanderson (Leominster, Mass.) took the top spot in the javelin throw with a PR of 36.40 meters, with teammate Taylor Solimine (Hudson, Mass.) finishing third at 27.33 meters. The winner of the shot put was Lancer sophomore Odelia Konadu (Worcester, Mass.) with a heave of 11.25 meters. Konadu also placed third in the discus at 29.70 meters.
On the track, Mensah's winning performance in the 200 meter dash was one of three top-four finishes for Worcester State in the event. MacGregor took third at 26.93 seconds, while Pellegrini was fourth at 27.27 seconds. The top three spots in the 100 meter dash all belonged to Worcester State, led by winner MacGregor at 13.08 seconds. Grady was second at 13.23 seconds, followed by Pellegrini at 13.27 seconds.
Senior Kyra Siano (North Attleborough, Mass.) won Worcester State's eighth and final event on the afternoon, taking top honors in the 5,000 meter run at 20:00.44. In the 400 meter run, Heather Turner (Ashland, Mass.) ran a time of 1:04.90 to place second, followed closely by fellow sophomore Grace Higgins (Tewksbury, Mass.), who finished third at 1:06.17. Kasey Clark (Dudley, Mass.) looked strong in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 5:18.22, placing third in the event.
Worcester State will return to action next Saturday at the Jerry Gravel Invitational, hosted by Westfield State University.
