Worcester, MA- Kicking off the indoor season would see the Worcester State Women's Track and Field team down in Connecticut to compete in the Wesleyan Indoor Invite. Both on the track and in the field the Lancers were set to make their presence known in their sole meet of 2024.
Grabbing the top spot of the day was graduate Sthanisha Moreau (Taunton, MA) who would take home first in the weight throw with a mark of 11.43m, just edging out senior Arianna Constant, who finished in third with a 10.6m measurement. Sophomore Luana Grau-Moura (Marlborough, MA) would take fourth in the event at 9.98m while first year Charlotte Collins would end the day in sixth at 9.75m. Fellow sophomore Jadah Stokes (Chicopee, MA) would claim her top finish of the day in the shot put, launching a 11.38m distance for second in the event, while Moreau would take fourth in the event at 9.83m. Adding her measurement to the final was first year Angela Crognalo-Torrez (Walpole, MA) who finished in 7th on a 8.85m. Grau-Moura and Collins would join the throwing party claiming 9th and 10th on distances of 8.71m and 8.03m.
Sophomore Alexis Strong (Southington, CT) would go double in second on the day as she claimed second in the long jump off a leap of 4.91m, following it up with a 8.24 sprint in the 60m for the Lancers.
Additional top finishes saw junior Kelsey Gendreau (Seekonk, MA) take second in the 3,000m at 12:05.71, just edging out fellow junior Leah Berg (Worcester, MA), who claimed third, at a time of 12:06.85. In a full junior powered race, Jillian McMenemy (Westborough, MA) would finish in a time of 14:00.58 for fifth in the event. The 400m would see an additional top three finish for Worcester as senior Carly Gilson (Grafton, MA) would claim third off a time of 64.80. First years Emily Bodwell and Alice Asante would also have strong finishes with Bodwell claiming sixth at 66.73 and Asanta in ninth with an 81.64. Gilson would additionally finish 9th in the 200m on a time of 28.79 where she was joined by Bodwell in 12th with a time of 29.09 and Asante in 28th at 33.18. Claiming 19th in the 200m was sophomore Meghan Driscoll (Mansfield, MA) at a time of 29.79 while first years Arianna Farrell (Wilmington, MA) and Stahina Dor (Port-Au-Prince, Haiti) would claim 26th and 29th in times of 31.52 and 33.38.
Sophomore Lauren Condike (East Longmeadow, MA) would claim a 5th and sixth place finish on he day as she marked a 1.45m height in the high jump for fifth, just ahead of first year Alexandria LaPointe (Fall River, MA) in 6th on a 1.40m. Condike would return to action in the triple jump, claiming sixth on a 8.96m distance, while LaPointe would grab her second sixth in the 60m hurdles, finishing in a time of 11.18.
As the distance expanded on the track the top finishes did not diminish as junior Bridget O'Malley (Leominster, MA) claimed 4th in the 600m in a time of 1:50.78 just 16 seconds ahead of first year Gracie Van Akin (Belmont, VT) who would come in 6th at 2:06.76. The mile would see a large contingent of the cross country team show their training in indoor as first year Cassandra Dirsa (Bolton, MA) claimed 4th in the mile at 6:19.71 leading the 5-7 pack of first year Samantha Edwards (East Longmeadow, MA) with a 6:21.52 and junior Aubrey Tunnera (Marlborough, MA) and Claudia Symonick (Auburn, MA) who crossed in times of 6:33.19 and 6:44.94.
The Lancers are now off until 2025 when they return to Welseyan for the Winter Indoor Invite on January 25th.
