Brown, Jasper, Lewis Propel Women's Volleyball At Bear Classic

 

New London, CT --- Junior Alyssa Jasper (Rockland, MA) totaled 39 kills while senior Megan Brown (Dartmouth, MA) amassed 31 kills and 29 digs as they both helped lead Worcester State this past weekend at the Bear Classic hosted by Coast Guard.

The Lancers (5-14) were defeated three times during the tournament which included a Friday evening 3-0 setback to regionally-ranked Coast Guard, a 3-2 Saturday morning loss by Ramapo of New Jersey and a 3-1 defeat by MASCAC rival Bridgewater State non-conference affair.

On the weekend, junior Amanda Lewis (Poughkeepsie, NY) doled out 90 assists between three matches for a career total of 1,264 as she is now just 69 off the all-time record held by former standout Janelle Lavoie (2003-06).

Women's volleyball statistics were first kept track starting in the 2003 campaign.

The Blue and Gold will play again on Thursday at Becker (7 PM) before heading to Framingham State for a trimatch with the host Rams (11 AM) and WPI (1 PM).

 

Bridgewater State 3, Worcester State 1

Senior Megan Brown tallied a season-best 17 kills to go with eight digs and a pair of block assists in a 3-1 non-conference loss to Bridgewater State on Saturday afternoon at the Bear Classic.

The BSU Bears (12-11) took the first two sets 27-25 and 25-18 before the Lancers rallied with the 25-19 win in the third. But Bridgewater State hit for a .244 hitting percentage with 16 team kills in the final stanza to clinch the match with a 25-21 score.

Junior Alyssa Jasper was also solid for the Blue and Gold with 12 kills while senior Vicki O'Brien (Canton, MA) added a match-high 22 digs.

Sophomore Jennifer Cabral (Swansea, MA) recorded 12 digs and junior Amanda Lewis handed out 36 helpers.

Worcester State committed 12 service errors in their setback to the Bears.

 

 

Ramapo 3, Worcester State 2

Junior Alyssa Jasper notched a double-double with 18 kills and 11 digs and senior Vicki O'Brien put up a career-best 29 digs as both of them helped lead the Lancers in a 3-2 setback against Ramapo on Saturday morning.

The two squads traded barbs in the 9 AM meeting with the Road Runners winning the first (25-17) and third (25-11) and the Blue and Gold earning the wins in the second (25-17) and fourth (25-22).

However, Ramapo (12-8) got the better of their opponents utilizing an 8-3 run midway through the fifth set for the 15-8 triumph to capture the win.

Senior Megan Brown was just shy of a double figures with nine kills and nine digs as junior Ali Remegio (Tewksbury, MA) and sophomore Meghan Deighan (Lynnfield, MA) combined for 15 kills for WSU.

Junior Amanda Lewis dished out 38 assists - for her tournament high - to go with 13 digs. Sophomore Kaylee Leduc (Swansea, MA) recorded 12 digs to lead the defensive effort.

O'Brien's previous career best was 27 digs in a 3-2 triumph over Framingham State in the 2010 MASCAC Tournament semifinals. The double-double for Lewis was her third of the campaign.

 

 

Coast Guard 3, Worcester State 0

Junior Alyssa Jasper and senior Megan Brown contributed 14 kills as they propelled the Blue and Gold in a 3-0 defeat to regionally-ranked Coast Guard on Friday evening. 

The Bears (16-5), ranked ninth in the latest New England Women's Volleyball Association poll, won in three straight sets by scores of 25-8, 25-13 and 25-23.

Brown had a team-best 14 digs while senior Vicki O'Brien put up 12. Junior Amanda Lewis had a strong effort on the court with 16 assists and eight digs.
