Women's Volleyball Blanks Local Rival Becker, 3-0

Leicester, MA --- Junior Alyssa Jasper (Rockland, MA) finished with a game-best 13 kills as she helped pace Worcester State to a 3-0 victory over Becker in non-conference women's volleyball action this evening at the Leicester Gym.

The Lancers (6-14) defeated the Hawks (3-18) in three consecutive sets, 25-19, 25-11 and 25-16.

Freshman Valerie Hoyle (Bridgewater, MA) also added five kills for the Blue and Gold while senior Vicki O'Brien (Canton, MA) and classmate Megan Brown (Dartmouth, MA) combined for 17 digs.

Brown, junior Ali Remigio (Tewksbury, MA) and sophomore Meghan Deighan (Lynnfield, MA) all registered four kills apiece. Junior Amanda Lewis (Poughkeepsie, NY) and sophomore Gina Battista (W. Springfield, MA) shared time at setter and helped the Lancers amass 28 team assists.

As a team the Lancers finished with 17 service aces - seven by O'Brien, four by sophomore Samantha Patterson (Ashby, MA) and three by Brown.

Freshman Marissa Turner (Coventry, RI) turned in a solid all-around performance for Becker with five kills, four solo blocks and a trio of digs.

Junior Lauren LaVallee (Millbury, MA) nearly had her third double-double of the season with 13 assists and nine digs. Senior Katelyn Burns (Fall River, MA) and junior Danielle Robbie (Bellingham, MA) each notched nine and seven digs, respectively.

Worcester State had the commanding 18-7 margin in the first set before the Hawks took advantage of several Lancer attacking errors and service miscues with a 10-4 run to trail by just five points (22-17).

But the Blue and Gold regrouped by scoring three of the last five points for the win with kills by Brown and Remigio.

In the second set, the Blue and Gold were paced by Jasper's five kills as the visitors also tallied seven service aces for the easy 25-11 triumph.

The third was close midway through as the Blue and Gold held a slim 13-11 edge. However, behind some solid serving by Patterson, the Lancers utilized a 7-1 spurt to make it a 20-12 contest for some breathing room.

Becker freshman Bethany Stone (Norwich, CT) chipped in with an ace and senior Kayla Prior (Swansea, MA) finished a kill to help the Hawks rally in an attempt to get back into the game (20-15), but the Lancers ended the final stanza with a 5-1 surge to clinch the match.

The Lancers head to Framingham State for a key 11 AM MASCAC matchup on Saturday before taking on WPI in Framingham at 1 o'clock. Becker hosts Lesley at noon this weekend in an NECC affair.
