Women's Volleyball Blanked By Western New England, 3-0

 

Springfield, MA --- Junior Alyssa Jasper (Rockland, MA) finished with nine kills and five digs and sophomore Gina Battista (W. Springfield, MA) added 16 assists and 10 digs as they both paced Worcester State in a 3-0 setback to Western New England this evening on the road.

The Golden Bears (20-8), who are recieving votes in this week's New England Women's Volleyball Association poll, dispatched of the Lancers (7-18) in three consecutive sets by scores of 26-24, 25-14 and 25-15.

Worcester State actually held the late 23-21 margin after a point by Jasper and a WNE attacking error, but Western New England took advantage of a pair of Lancer offensive miscues and a ball handling misplay to post the 26-24 win.

In the second set, the Blue and Gold were down 12-8 midway through the stanza, however the hosts used a 13-6 run to take the frame.

After WSU trimmed the deficit to 20-12 in the third WNE closed things out with a 5-3 run for the victory.

Senior Megan Brown (Dartmouth, MA) also finished with totals of four kills and six assists while senior Vicki O'Brien (Canton, MA) and sophomore Jennifer Cabral (Swansea, MA) put up 16 and 10 digs, respectively.

Battista rounded out her solid evening with four kills and a pair of aces for WSU.

The two squads were even in total attacks (128-126) and the Lancers held the 67-63 lead in digs, but committed 28 attacking errors.

Western New England also combined for 11 blocks with six block assists by senior Tyler Singh (Dumont, NJ) and five by classmate Devyrn Frank (Mystic, CT).

The Lancers will vye for a home game in a key matchup on Saturday against Salem State at 7 PM at WPI. Western New England closes out their regular season schedule with a 1 o'clock matchup against Wentworth at home.
