Worcester State Sweeps Salem State in MASCAC Opener

SALEM, Mass. – Worcester State cruised to a 3-0 sweep over Salem State in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) opener for both teams on Tuesday (Sep. 13) evening at Twohig Gymnasium.

 

With the win, the Lancers improve to 4-3 and 1-0 in conference while the Vikings suffer their seventh straight defeat and are now 1-7 and 0-1 in the MASCAC.



Katrina Kangwijaya (Dunstable, Mass.) led Worcester State with 13 digs and three assists while Emily Carens (Northborough, Mass.) added seven kills and Alexandra Nolan (Melrose, Mass.) notched 16 assists.



Salem Sate's Hannah Mullarkey (Salem, Mass.) led the defense with eight digs for the Vikings. Morgan Adams (Scotia, N.Y.) recorded a team-high nine assists and Haley Reed (Goffstown, N.H.) chipped in with five kills.



Worcester State held off Salem State in a close first set 25-21, taking advantage of multiple errors by the Vikings down the stretch.

 

Salem State, whit hit -.020 for the game, fell behind 15-6 in the second game as the Lancers scored six straight points with Stephanie Chapin (Hampden, Mass.) at the serve. Carens had three straight kills during the spurt as Worcester State won going away, 25-12.

 

In the third set, the Lancers took advantage of five straight errors to build a 24-14 lead before finishing off the sweep with a 25-15 victory.


Salem State will play a tri-meet match at Anna Maria against the AMCATS and Newbury College on Saturday (Sep. 17) at 12:00 noon. Worcester State will compete at Wentworth in a tri-meet with Lesley beginning at 1:00 p.m. also on Saturday.
