BOSTON – The Worcester State University Lancers split in Saturday afternoon's tri-match hosted by Wentworth Institute of Technology, as they defeated Lesley 3-0 in their first game of the day, and then fell to Wentworth 3-0 in their second match. With the split, the Lancers slide to 5-4 on the season.
Match 1: Wentworth 3, Lesley 0
The Leopards bolted out of the gate taking the first set, 25-13 behind a trio of first years. First year outside hitter Claire Quirk (Mission Viejo, Calif.) led the way with two kills while classmates Leah Rogoz (Woodridge, Ill.) and Samantha Lassiter (Rogers, Ark.) went up for a double block.
After taking the second set, 25-12, to take a two-match advantage, Wentworth closed the door in the third set, hitting .364 en route the 25-14 victory to claim the match. Junior right sideCaroline Shea (Abington, Mass.) registered five her team-high six kills in the third set. First yearLexie Cambray (Bedford, N.H.) posted five of the Leopards 16 service aces.
Lynx junior middle hitter Kaylee Deluga (Dennis, Mass.) led the offense hitting .500 with a match-high seven kills on 12 attempts and just one error. Fellow junior, outside hitter Anni Abbruzzese (Croton on Hudson, N.Y.) followed up with six kills and six digs.
Match 2: Worcester State 3, Lesley 0
The Lynx dropped their second match of the day to Worcester State University, 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-21). Worcester State first year outside hitter Stephanie Chapin (Hampden, Mass.) paced the Lancer offense hitting .314 with 14 kills on 35 attempts and two block assists. Sophomore outside hitter Emily Carens (Northborough, Mass.) followed up with 13 kills on 32 attempts and four errors for a solid .281 attack percentage.
Deluga led the Lynx with a team-high 12 kills and solo block while junior opposite hitter Sarah Hollis (Hudson, Mass.) followed up with five kills. Senior libero Jess Reynolds (Londonderry, N.H.) registered a match-high 14 digs on the defensive side.
Match 3: Wentworth, 3 Worcester State 0
In the final match of the afternoon, Lassiter was nearly perfect recording five kills on seven attempts with three total blocks – two assisted and one solo – as Wentworth took the final match, 3-0, against Worcester State.
Quick was equally as dominant, offensively, in the final match, was Quick who hit .444, notching five kills on nine attempts with just one miscue, against the Leopards. Junior setter Katelyn Carlson (Stratford, Conn.), who also posted five kills of her own, paced the offense with 12 assists along with fellow setter Katie Clouse (Hudson Falls, N.Y.) who recorded 15 assists.
Worcester State sophomore setter Alexandra Nolan (Melrose, Mass.) paced the Lancers with 14 assists while classmate, Carens led the way with six kills. First year outside hitter Stephanie Chapin (Hampden, Mass.) followed up her classmate with four kills.
The Lancers return to action on Tuesday (Sep. 20) when they host Keene State in a 7:00 p.m. non-conference match.
