Lancers Downed by Rhode Island College, 3-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Worcester State University Lancers fell to Rhode Island College 3-0 in a Thursday night match at the Murray Center.

 

Rhode Island College's Abigayl White (Coventry, R.I.) came into tonight's action needing 13 assists to reach the 2,000 assist plateau and surpassed the mark with 15 helpers in a 25-23 first set win for the hosts. The Anchorwomen (8-9) then won the next two sets, 25-19, and 25-16 over the Lancers (9-13).

 

Rhode Island College had three players record double-digit kill efforts, led by sophomore outside hitter Jillian Ward's (Coventry, R.I.) 11 winners. Ward also paced the hosts with 11 digs. Junior middle blocker Sierra Smith (Longmont, Colo.) hit .588 (10-0-17) with 10 kills and also contributed four blocks. Junior outside hitter Courtney Lambrese (North Smithfield, R.I.) registered 10 kills and five digs. White raised her career assist mark to 2,028 with 41 helpers. Sophomore defensive specialist Marisa Brynes (Warwick, R.I.) posted 10 digs.

 

Worcester State sophomore outside hitters Caleigh Davis (Acushnet, Mass.) and Emily Carens (Northborough, Mass.) led the visitors with eight and seven kills, respectively. Sophomore setter Alexandra Nolan (Melrose, Mass.) handed out 24 assists and classmate Lauren Murphy (Taunton, Mass.) registered 12 digs.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play a tri-match at Trinity, along with WPI, on Saturday, Oct. 15. The Lancers look to host Mass. Maritime and Pine Manor College in a tri-match in the Lancer Gymnasium, also on Saturday.
