WORCESTER, Mass. – The Worcester State women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to Framingham State and Rhode Island College in their regular season finale at home Saturday afternoon inside the Lancer Gymnasium.
GAME ONE: Framingham State 3, Worcester State 2
The Lancers dropped a 3-2 decision to the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) regular season champions, Framingham State in the first game of the day.
The Lancers grabbed the first set 25-13 to prevail over the Rams, only for Framingham State to come back and notch a 25-19 victory in the second set to tie the score at 1-1. The Lancers rebounded for a 25-15 triumph in the third, but the Rams took the fourth 25-10 setting up for a fifth set victory, wining 15-10.
The Rams were led by 24 kills, 20 digs and seven blocks from senior Alycia Rackliffe (Feeding Hills, Mass.), while freshman Deirdre Fay (Cornwall, NY) recorded a team-best 25 digs and five kills. Junior Vicki Anderson (Attleboro, Mass.) added 20 digs, while sophomore Mackenzie Whalen (Norton, Mass.) added 16 digs and 39 set assists.
The Lancers received 13 kills and 23 digs from Emily Carens (Northborough, Mass.), while Katrina Kangwijaya (Dunstable, Mass.) added 25 digs for the Lancers. Worcester's Alexandra Nolan (Melrose, Mass.) grabbed a team-best 35 assists in the game.
GAME TWO: Rhode Island College 3, Worcester State 0
The Rhode Island College Anchorwomen downed the Lancers 3-0 in their regular season finale as they won by sets of 25-23, 25-23, and 25-15. The Lancers registered their greatest attack percentage in the second set at .278, but unfortunately, did not overcome the Anchorwomen's .343 in the same set.
Worcester's Carens led the team with a double-double of 10 kills and 14 digs. Nolan once again helped the offense with a team-best 22 assists. Worcester State's senior Valerie Hoyle (Bridgewater, Mass.) tallied two block assists to take the Worcester State all-time record in career block assists with 108.
The Anchorwomen's Courtney Lambrese (Cranston, R.I.) led the team with 18 kills, while Jacqueline Jutras (Foster, R.I.) tacked on 10. Abigayl White (Coventry, R.I.) assisted the offense with 28 helpers, while a trio of Anchorwomen notched double digits in the dig category.
Today the Lancers honored three seniors (Courtney Salisbury, Valerie Hoyle, and Quinn Donovan) before the tri-match, and presented them and their families with gifts and flowers.
The Lancers complete their regular season with an 11-19 overall record, and 2-4 record in conference. Next up, the No. 5 seed Worcester State will travel to the No. 4 seed Bridgewater State on Wednesday (Nov. 2) to play in the quarterfinal round of the MASCAC tournament.
