Worcester State Wins Five Set Thriller Over Rhode Island College, 3-2

WORCESTER, Mass. -  Emily Carens (Northborough, Mass.) and Amari King (Lawrence, Mass.) combined for a total of 35 kills and 38 digs to lead the Blue and Gold to a 3-2 (28-26, 21-25, 25-12, 16-25, 15-13) win over Rhode Island College Tuesday evening.

1ST SET

The first set saw a total of 13 ties as each team battled back-and-forth for the set win. Following a 26-26 tie on a kill by RIC's Abigayl White (Coventry, R.I.) Worcester State's Stephanie Chapin (Hampden, Mass.) scored a point for the Lancers on a kill, assisted by Allie Nolan (Melrose, Mass.). Katrina Kangwijaya (Dunstable, Mass.) gave the Lancers the match point as she tallied the 28th point on a service ace. Despite Worcester State taking the first set by a score of 28-26, the Anchorwomen posted a team attack percentage of .273, while the Lancers stood at .085.

 

2nd SET

The Anchorwomen came out strong in the second set as they gained a quick four point lead on kills from Jacqueline Jutras (Foster, R.I.) and Worcester State errors. However the Lancers regained control after trailing for the first half and knotted the score at 11-11. Following three more ties, Worcester State went on a 5-1 run to post an 18-14 edge over the Anchorwomen. Though, RIC fought back with kills from Courtney Lambrese (Cranston, R.I.) and Sadie Swap (Ivoryton, Conn.) to take the second and tie the game at 1-1.  

3rd SET

Worcester State dominated in the third set as they outscored their opponents 25-12 and the team saw a game-high .333 attack percentage.

 

4TH SET

The roles were reversed in the fourth as Rhode Island College registered 16 kills on 41 attempts and held Worcester State to a .000 attack percentage.

 

5TH SET

The game-deciding set was tied at 1, 2, and 4-all until Worcester State gained three back-to-back points on a Chapin kill and RIC attack errors. RIC rallied and got within one on a bad set from Worcester to put the score at 9-8. Worcester State held a slight lead up until RIC knotted the score at 13-13. Worcester State's Chapin sealed the win as she recorded a kill for the 14th point and blocked a RIC attempt for the win.

 

DIG THE DIGITS

  • King registered a double-double of 15 kills and 18 digs, while Carens marked a game-high 19 kills and 20 digs for another double-double. King earned game-high honors in service aces with five.
  • The Lancers' setter, Nolan logged 42 helpers and recorded three service aces.
  • Defensively, Megan Leavens (Storrs, Conn.) notched a game-high 21 digs and Chapin marked a game-high seven blocks for the Blue and Gold.
  • For RIC, both Lambrese and Jillian Ward (Coventry, R.I.) both recorded double-doubles. Lambrese and Ward combined for a total of 37 kills and 37 digs.
  • Anchorwomen setter, White, chalked up a team-high 44 assists.
  • Jessica Breilmaier (W. Greenwich, R.I.) led RIC in blocks with five (two solo, three assisted).
  • Worcester State saw its first win over RIC since 2014. In both 2015 and 2016, Worcester State went 0-4 against the Anchorwomen.

UP NEXT

The volleyball team hits the road for the first time this season, starting on Friday when they head to New London, Conn. to compete in the Coast Guard/Conn. College tournament from Sep. 8-9.
