Women’s Volleyball Beats Salem State for 10th Straight Win; Lancers Remain Undefeated in MASCAC

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Worcester State University volleyball team used a .324 hitting percentage to defeat Salem State 3-0 (25-5, 25-9, 25-14) in a Tuesday evening Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) matchup inside the Lancer Gymnasium. With the win, the Lancers extend their winning streak to 10 and remain undefeated in the league.

1ST SET

Worcester State began the evening with 12 straight points with Megan Leavens (Storrs, Conn.) at the service. The Lancers scored six points on Viking errors, while Stephanie Chapin (Hampden, Mass.) Emily Carens (Northborough, Mass.) and Murphy accounted for the other points. The Vikings reached the board on a service error to break the nil score and added another point on a kill from Jasmine Severino (Lawrence, Mass.) to cut the Lancers' lead to 10. However, the Lancers pulled away once again with Lauren Murphy (Taunton, Mass.) at the service as they scored seven consecutive points to put the game out of reach for the Vikings. The Lancers concluded the set with a 25-5 score on a Salem State ball handling error. Worcester State held its highest attack percentage in the first set at .400, while the Vikings notched a negative attack.

 

2ND SET

Worcester State gained a quick two-point advantage at the start of the second set on a kill from Carens and a Murphy service ace. Salem State matched the two points on a Worcester attack error and a kill from Chloe Roy (West Springfield, Mass.). Worcester State then slowly pushed away and gained a four point lead on a kill from Amari King (Lawrence, Mass.). Following the Vikings' fifth point of the set, Worcester State went on a 9-0 run with King at the service to advance the Lancers' lead to 12. The teams traded points, but the Blue and Gold wrapped up the set with a 5-0 run, including two service aces from Katrina Kangwijaya (Dunstable, Mass.). King logged a set-best four service aces and seven digs, while Chapin led the attack with five kills.

 

3RD SET

Worcester State jumped out to a quick 11-2 lead with Murphy and Kangwijaya at the service. The Lancers held a comfortable lead throughout the remainder of the set as the teams traded points, in turn, resulting in the 25-14 final score. The Vikings' saw a game-best seven kills in the final set, as three came from Roy, who chalked up a .750 hitting percentage in the final set.

  • As a team, Worcester State marked a .324 hitting percentage, while the Vikings were held to a zero attack.
  • Worcester State held a 28-14 advantage in kills and a 39-31 edge in digs.
  • In total, the Lancers gathered a season-high 19 service aces in the win.
  • The Lancers' offense was guided by Chapin who marked a game-best nine kills, while Carens and King chipped in eight and seven, respectively.
  • Worcester State's attack was assisted by Allie Nolan (Melrose, Mass.) who collected 25 helpers.
  • Kangwijaya marked notched nine service aces in the win.
  • Defensively for Worcester State, Leavens and King dug up 13 and 10 balls, respectively.
  • For the Vikings, Severino and Roy recorded four kills apiece in the loss.
  • Mackenzie Salls (Turner Falls, Mass.) recorded a team-high 11 assists, while on the defensive end Hannah Mullarkey (Salem, Mass.) tallied 10 digs.

 

UP NEXT

The Lancers hit the road on Thursday (Oct. 12) to face UMass-Dartmouth in a 6 p.m. before returning to conference play on Saturday (Oct. 14). The Vikings also resume play on Thursday when they travel to Curry for a non-conference match.
