Women’s Volleyball Defeats Anna Maria 3-0 on Leukemia and Lymphoma Awareness Night

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Worcester State University women's volleyball team used a .469 team hitting percentage to defeat the visiting AMCATS of Anna Maria College on the team's Leukemia and Lymphoma Awareness Night, in honor of head coach Bernie Chase's mother, Madeline "Maddie Credit".

1ST SET

Worcester State University used a .600 team attack percentage to win the first set by a score of 25-5. The Lancers attained a 3-0 lead on kills from Emily Carens (Northborough, Mass.) and a Megan Leavens (Storrs, Conn.) service ace before Anna Maria earned the first point of the evening on a Worcester State service error to put the score at 3-1. Then, the Blue and Gold went on a 13-0 run with Lauren Murphy (Taunton, Mass.) at the service to put the game out of reach for the AMCATS. Carens led the attack in the first set with six kills, while Stephanie Chapin (Hampden, Mass.) and Amari King (Lawrence, Mass.) punched in five kills apiece. Sarah Lathrop (Waterford, Conn.) recorded two kills in the set for the AMCATS.

 

2ND SET

Worcester State opened the second set with a 7-0 run on kills from Carens, Murphy, and Chapin until the Lancers' forced Anna Maria to take a timeout. Following the timeout, Anna Maria's Rebecca Foti (Bedford, N.H.) tallied the AMCATS' first kill of the second set. The Lancers pushed ahead to a 14-point lead following AMCAT attack errors. However, Anna Maria responded with a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to nine on kills from Foti and a service ace from Kerri Earle (Bethel, Conn.). The teams traded points and the Lancers concluded the second set with a 25-14 score. Chapin led the Lancers with six kills and a solo block in the set.

 

3RD SET

Following a 1-1 score, Worcester State went on a 16-1 run with Murphy and Katrina Kangwijaya (Dunstable, Mass.) at the service. The Lancers held the lead and closed the night out with kills from Jillian Dombroski (Sutton, Mass.) and Carens. King marked a set-high five kills for the Lancers, while Abygail Chapdelaine (East Longmeadow, Mass.) punched in a team-high two kills for the AMCATS.

  

BY THE BOOK

  • Chapin matched a career-high 15 kills in the win. King and Carens each logged 11 kills, while Murphy tallied four for the Blue and Gold.
  • The Lancers' offense was assisted by Allie Nolan (Melrose, Mass.) who recorded 36 assists, while the defense was guided by Leavens who had 16 digs.
  • As a team, the Lancers marked 12 service aces, while Kangwijaya registered a game-high four.
  • Seven Worcester State players logged a .400 or above attack percentage in the win.
  • The AMCATS were led by Chapdelaine and Lathrop who notched four kills apiece. Hannah Mitchell (Pittsfield, Mass.) went 3-for-4 for a .750 hitting percentage.
  • Anna Maria's offense was assisted by Earle who had 12 helpers.
  • Caroline Garcia (Springfield, Mass.) dug up a team-high 10 balls in the setback.

 

UP NEXT

The volleyball team returns to Lancer Gymnasium on Thursday (Oct. 26) for a non-conference match against Mount Ida. The Lancers conclude their regular season on Friday (Oct. 27) when they host Fitchburg State and Nichols in a tri-match, beginning at 4 p.m. The AMCATS wrap up play on Saturday (Oct. 28) when they travel to Lasell for a tri-match.
