Women's Volleyball Swept Twice at Wheaton Invitational

NORTON, Mass. - Senior Amari King (Lawrence, Mass.) recorded a pair of double-doubles, but it was not enough as the Worcester State women's volleyball team suffered a pair of 3-0 defeats at Friday's Wheaton College Invitational. The Lancers lost the opener in afternoon to the hosts from Wheaton (25-17, 25-18, 26-24), before falling in the nightcap to Middlebury College (25-20, 25-20, 25-19). With the losses, the Lancers fall to 1-4 on the season.

King, the reigning MASCAC Player of the Week, finished match number one with 11 kills and 10 digs for the double-double, but the story of the match was the strong defense of Wheaton that kept her from an even bigger outing. The Lyons had four players hit double digits in digs on the day, while King finished with 11 kills and just two attack errors on 32 attempts.

Junior Stephanie Chapin (Hampden, Mass.) had a strong outing in the opening match as well, putting down eight kills in the defeat. Allie Nolan (Melrose, Mass.) dished out each of the Lancers' 26 assists in the match, while senior Megan Leavens (Storrs, Conn.) recorded 15 digs.

King had a nearly identical stat line in the nightcap, finishing match number two with 11 kills and 11 digs for the double-double. Like the Lyons, Middlebury played stellar defense in the match, as the Lancers were held to an attack percentage of just .146. Leavens was the match's defensive leader, picking up 22 digs in the loss.

Worcester State will be back on the court for contests against Bates and Farmingdale State on Saturday, also at the Wheaton Invitational.
