WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 victory over UMass Dartmouth on Thursday evening in non-conference action at John P. Brissette Court. Set scores were 25-9, 25-20, 25-18.
With the win, the Lancers pick up their third consecutive win and improve to 13-7 overall. The Corsairs drop to 7-12 with the defeat. The win was the 200th of Worcester State head coach Bernie Chase's career coaching the Lancers.
Worcester State sailed easily to take the first set from UMass Dartmouth. After a 5-0 run put the Lancers ahead 14-4 midway through the set with senior Amari King (Lawrence, Mass.) at the service line, the Lancers were able to cruise to the opening set win, taking an early 1-0 lead on the night.
The match appeared to be headed towards a tie score in the early stages of the second set, as the Corsairs opened on a 12-4 run. The Lancers didn't let them out of their sights, however, as King recorded three kills on an 11-1 run moments later to put Worcester State ahead 17-15. From there, the Lancers didn't look back, taking a commanding 2-0 lead
Worcester State closed out the night strong and took the lead early cruising their way to victory. The Corsairs went on a 6-0 run to help narrow the score in the waning moments of the set, but the Lancers fought strong to record the win.
King led all players on the evening with 12 kills. She didn't record a single attack error in the match for an impressive .632 attack percentage. Stephanie Chapin (Hampden, Mass.) recorded five service aces on the night, all coming in the second set to help in the Lancer comeback effort.
Samantha Sedano (Valley Glen, Calif.) led the Corsairs with nine kills on the night. Jillian Sykora (Waterford, Conn.) recorded 11 digs over the three sets.
Next up for the Lancers, they will host "Volleyball for Maddie" on Saturday at Brissette Court, as they take on Framingham State and Clark. Fans are encouraged to wear orange to the match to raise awareness for leukemia and lymphoma, and in honor of Maddie Credit, mother of Worcester State head coach Bernie Chase, who passed away in 2016.
The Corsairs will return to action on Saturday as they host a tri-match with Castleton and Emerson.
