NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Senior Emily Carens (Northborough, Mass.) recorded career kill number 1,000 on Friday evening as the Worcester State University volleyball team suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Brandeis University on the opening day of the Hall of Fame Invitational Tournament on the campus of Smith College. Set scores were 25-19, 25-22, 25-20.

With the loss, the Lancers fall to 15-9 overall on the season, while the Judges improve to 9-14.

The milestone kill for Carens came late in the opening set, on her fourth kill of the evening. The kill put the Lancers ahead by a score of 17-16. The Judges would respond however, going on a 9-2 run to take the opening set and gain the early advantage.

Worcester State couldn't get into a rhythm until it was too little too late in the second set. Trailing 24-19 in the closing stages, the Lancers went on a mini 3-0 run, but couldn't complete the comeback, falling 25-22 to go behind 2-0.

The Lancers opened the third set by jumping ahead by a lead of 4-2, but couldn't hold on, eventually falling by a score of 25-20.

Carens was the match's leader with 13 kills on the evening, while also recording 15 digs. Senior Lauren Murphy (Taunton, Mass.) recorded eight kills on the night, while Stephanie Chapin (Hampden, Mass.) tallied seven. Senior Amari King (Lawrence, Mass.) chipped in on both sides of the ball, with 12 digs and six kills in the defeat. 

The Lancers will be back in action with a double header on Saturday at the Hall of Fame Tournament, taking on Wheaton and Plymouth State on Saturday.
