WORCESTER, Mass. – Last Saturday proved to be a historic day for Worcester State University volleyball program as the Lancers split a tri-match at Higgins Court on the campus of Regis College, especially for seniors Megan Leavens (Storrs, Conn.) and Allie Nolan (Melrose, Mass.).
The pair both set career milestones on Saturday, as Leavens recorded her 1,000th career dig during the match against Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Nolan became the school's all-time leader in assists.
This season is only Leavens' third season on the Worcester State volleyball team, but a huge junior season where she recorded 562 digs has allowed her to surpass 1000 career digs in only three seasons. Leavens has averaged 15.4 digs per game throughout her career as a Lancer. She currently leads the Lancers in digs this season and is third in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference.
"Megan is a standout for us on defense," said Lancer head coach Bernie Chase. "The fact that she's done this in just two and a half years is a true testament to her work ethic."
Nolan is in her fourth season on the Worcester State team. Her junior season was a big one, as she totaled 1,084 assists, putting her well on track to beating the school record. That season, she averaged 9.26 assists per set. She has actually improved upon that mark this season, as she is now averaging 9.37 assists per set, good for first in the MASCAC. Nolan has led the Lancers in assists in each of the last three seasons.
"Allie has been running our offense all four years she's been here," said Chase. "She simply puts the ball in the hands of our offensive leaders for the kills."
The Lancers return to action this evening with a road match against Salem State. They will come home for a match on Thursday, October 11 against UMass Dartmouth.
