Women's Volleyball Sweeps Salem State to Open MASCAC Play

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's volleyball began Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a 3-0 win over Salem State University Tuesday evening at John P. Brissette Court. Set scores were 25-13, 25-14, 25-12.

With the win, Worcester State improves to 3-5 and 1-0 in the MASCAC. Salem State continues to seek its first win of the 2019 season, dropping to 0-5.

Seniors Stephanie Chapin (Hampden, Mass.) and Megan Johns (Burrillville, R.I.) each had four first set kills to help Worcester State take an early 1-0 lead. Chapin also chipped in with a pair of service aces in the set.

Chapin continued to impress in set two, putting down six kills on eight attempts, as the Lancers again cruised to a victory. Sophomore Natalie Gillis (Ashland, Mass.) tacked on five kills of her own in the set to lift the hosts. Worcester State shined on defense in the set as well, allowing just two Viking kills.

Worcester State went the entire third set without an attack error to help secure the victory. Gillis and freshman Gabby Alberghini (Northborough, Mass.) each recorded three kills in the set as Worcester State soared to the conference win.

Chapin finished with a match-high 12 kills, while finishing a dig shy of a double-double at nine digs. Gillis finished with eight kills, while sophomore Brooke Lamothe (Tewksbury, Mass.) led all players with 12 digs. Leading Salem State was freshman Sarah Janco (Methuen, Mass.), who recorded seven kills.

Worcester State will be back in action on Saturday for a home trimatch against Western New England University and Wheaton.
