Women's Volleyball Swept in Home Tri-Match

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's volleyball team suffered a pair of losses Saturday afternoon as they hosted Western New England University and Wheaton College in a tri-match at John P. Brissette Court. The Lancers fell 3-2 to Western New England (25-13, 22-25, 25-15, 22-25, 15-13) and 3-0 to Wheaton (25-23, 25-18, 25-10).

With the losses, Worcester State drops to 3-7 overall on the season.

The Lancers came back from a set down twice against the Golden Bears, but couldn't hold a fifth set lead before falling 15-13. The Lancers led by as many as four points in the fifth set before Western New England battled back to claim the victory.

Worcester State sophomore Natalie Gillis (Ashland, Mass.) and Western New England Cassandra Holmes (Ellington, Conn.) each led their teams with 17 kills. Gillis finished with a team-high 15 digs to complete the double-double, while senior Marissa Proia (Framingham, Mass.) and freshman Camryn Burgio (Quincy, Mass.) had 12 and 11 digs respectively in the defeat.

The first set of Worcester State's match against Wheaton was tightly contested, featuring 11 ties and five lead changes, but it would be Wheaton to reach 25 first, narrowly edging out the Lancers 25-23. Worcester State couldn't regain its composure in sets two and three, and Wheaton clinched its second sweep of the afternoon.

Gillis and sophomore Leelle Tyler (Longmeadow, Mass.) were Worcester's co-leaders with seven kills apiece. Junior Madison Kuzio (Franklin, Mass.) paced Worcester State defensively with 13 digs to lead all players.

Worcester State will return to the court for a Tuesday night non-conference battle on the road against Keene State. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
