Women's Volleyball Sails Past Mass. Maritime

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's volleyball team made quick work of Mass. Maritime on Saturday evening, defeating the Buccaneers 3-0 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference action at the Clean Harbors Center. Set scores were 25-9, 25-13, 25-11.

With the win, Worcester State moves to 7-15 overall this season and 3-2 in MASCAC play.

The Lancers were off and running right from the start on Saturday, dominating set one 25-9 to take a 1-0 lead. Leading 19-9 late in the set, the Lancers rattled off the match's next six points, including four consecutive Stephanie Chapin (Hampden, Mass.) service aces to jump out to the early edge.

A Leelle Tyler (Longmeadow, Mass.) kill capped an 8-3 Lancer run to start set two, after which Worcester State never looked back. The Lancers hit .316 in the set with 10 kills and just four errors to take a commanding 2-0 lead.

Worcester State left no doubt in the deciding third set, again jumping in front early in the set to clinch the match. Natalie Gillis (Ashland, Mass.) recorded one of her match-high seven kills to wrap up a 10-3 Lancer run to open the set en route to the victory.

Gillis and Chapin, with seven service aces in the match, were Worcester's offensive leaders on the day. Chapin also pitched in five digs and four blocks on the defensive side of the ball, while freshman Camryn Burgio (Quincy, Mass.) led Worcester State with seven digs.

The Lancers will be back on the court on Wednesday evening for a MASCAC matchup against MCLA at John P. Brissette Court. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
