Women's Volleyball Shuts Down Anna Maria on Senior Night

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's volleyball team defeated Anna Maria College 3-0 on Tuesday night in non-conference action at John P. Brissette Court. Set scores were 25-9, 25-6, 25-13.

With the win, Worcester State improves to 8-17 overall on the season. Anna Maria falls to 2-20.

Prior to the match, the Worcester State Athletic Department honored the four members of the Lancer senior class, Stephanie Chapin (Hampden, Mass.), Katie Gagnon (Hampden, Mass.), Megan Johns (Burrillville, R.I.), and Marissa Proia (Framingham, Mass.), before they played their final regular season home match at Brissette Court. The quartet was joined on the court by their families and friends.

Worcester State was dominant in the opening set, beginning the match on a 16-2 run. Anna Maria's two points both came on Lancer service errors, and sophomore Natalie Gillis (Ashland, Mass.) recorded four kills during the surge. Johns would also finish the set with four kills, as Worcester State took the early 1-0 advantage.

The second set was more of the same for Worcester State, who won the set by a margin of 25-6. Leading 9-3 nearing the midway point of the set, the Lancers went on an 8-0 run with freshman Emily Laventure (Cranston, R.I.) at the service line to go ahead 17-3. Chapin led the Lancers with five kills in the set.

Chapin again led the way for the Lancers in set three with four kills to help her team close out the victory. The match was clinched on a block by Gagnon and senior Erin Gaffney (Worcester, Mass.)

Worcester State was on fire offensively in the match, with 33 kills to just eight errors for an attack percentage of .325. Anna Maria struggled to a clip of -.126. Chapin led all players in the match with 10 kills, while Johns recorded eight kills and nine digs in the win. AMCAT freshman Serena Dennis led all players with 15 digs.

Worcester State will return to the court on the road at UMass Dartmouth on Thursday evening. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
