Shaughnessy Claims MASCAC Women’s Cross Country Rookie of the Week Accolade

WORCESTER, Mass. – Worcester State University's freshman Riley Shaughnessy (New Bedford, Mass.) has been named the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) women's cross country rookie of the week, as announced by the league Monday (Nov. 13) afternoon.

This past weekend, Shaughnessy placed 180th at the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championships at Gorham Country Club in Gorham, Maine. She finished the 6K race with a time of 24:26.7.

"Riley's 24:26.7 in NCAA Regional Championship 6k meet is a 1:37 personal best (she ran 26:03.4 at Connecticut College in mid-October)" commented head coach Gary Jusseaume on Shaughnessy 's performance this past weekend. "Riley has evolved this freshman cross country season into a veteran runner. Her dedicated work ethic and sense of competition are traits I'd expect from a seasoned veteran.

"She's a wonderful athlete to coach and significant PRs are in her future," concluded Jusseaume.

The fall 2017 season has come to an end but the Lancers will resume again next year with a strong returning group of athletes for the fall 2018 season.
