Cross Country Impresses at James Earley Invitational

WESTFIELD, Mass. - Senior Mia Rogers (North Dighton, Mass.) finished third overall out of a field of 214 runners on the women's side, highlighting strong performances by the Worcester State University men's and women's cross country teams Saturday at the James Earley Invitational, hosted by Westfield State University at Stanley Park. 

Rogers led the women's team to a fifth place finish overall out of 29 teams, while the men's team was led by 15th place finisher Patrick Carleton (Tewksbury, Mass.) on its way to a sixth place team finish out of 29 teams.

Junior Elisabeth Olson (Wilmington, Mass.) crossed the finish line in 15th place to rank second for the Lancer women on the day, running the 5k course in a time of 19:17. Junior Kyra Siano (North Attleboro, Mass.) was the third Lancer finisher, finishing in 37th, with senior Kelsey Bedard (Leominster, Mass.) finishing right behind her in 39th. Rounding out the top five for the Lancers was freshman Kasey Clark (Dudley, Mass.), who was 50th overall on the day.

The youth movement of the Worcester State men's team continued on Saturday, as the top four Lancer finishers were rookies. Following close behind Carleton was freshman Drew Fottler (Chelmsford, Mass.), who finished in 19th place overall for Worcester State. Freshmen Tim Mahoney (Townsend, Mass.) and Colin Brennan (Newbury, Mass.) finished consecutively, in 56th and 57th respectively, to be the third and fourth Lancers to cross the finish line on Saturday. Senior Joe Grider (Hopedale, Mass.) capped off the Lancer scorers on the day, finishing in 74th place.

The Lancers will be off for three weeks before taking part in the MASCAC Championships on Oct. 27 at Mt. Greylock in Williamstown, Mass.
