Men and Women Both Second as Cross Country Opens Season at Worcester City Meet

PAXTON, Mass. - The Worcester State University men's and women's cross country teams both finished in second place as the Lancers opened their season by hosting the Worcester City Meet at Moore State Park Saturday morning.

Sophomore Patrick Carleton (Tewksbury, Mass.) opened up his season with a bang, winning the men's 8k race, breezing through the course in 28:18 to win by 22 seconds. Classmate Wayne Carey (Shrewsbury, Mass.) was Worcester State's second finisher, placing fourth with a time of 28:48.

Finishing third and fourth respectively for Worcester State were junior Brian King (Stow, Mass.) and sophomore Drew Fottler (Chelmsford, Mass.), who crossed the line back-to-back in 10th and 11th place. Rounding out Worcester State's scorers was sophomore Sam Magee (Salem, Mass.), who finished the course in 31:32.

On the women's side, reigning MASCAC Runner of the Year Elisabeth Olson (Wilmington, Mass.) was the top Lancer finisher, placing third at 20:42 in the 5k race. Sophomores Ryann Molinari (Grafton, Mass.) and Kasey Clark (Dudley, Mass.) finished directly behind Olson for fourth and fifth place finishes respectively at 20:46 and 21:01.

Rounding out Worcester State's scorers were juniors Olivia Morin (Westford, Mass.), who finished in eighth at 21:46, and Shaylee Puleo (Tewksbury, Mass.), who finished in 12th at 22:20.

Westfield State won both races on the day, beating Worcester State by 13 points on the men's side and three points on the women's side.

Both teams will be off until September 28, when they compete in the Purple Valley Classic hosted by Williams College at Mt. Greylock Regional High School.
