Title: | Class of 1994 |
Margaret "Peg" Nugent '59, you established the Women's Varsity
Intercollegiate Athletic Program at Worcester State College and you
were the coordinator of women's athletics from 1968 through 1980
and were also a coach for many years.
It was your knowledge and leadership which set the foundation for
what the women's athletic programs are today.
You coached the women's volleyball team from 1968 to 1974 and the
women's tennis team from 1968 to 1984. Your teams won the
Massachusetts State College volleyball titles in 1968 and 1973 and
your tennis team won the MASCAC title in 1984 as well as the MAIAW
tennis title in 1975. Your tennis teams qualified for the MAIAW
Tournament every year from 1974 through 1983 and at least eight
players were invited to participate in the All New England Tennis
Tournament.
You were a charter member of the MAIAW organization and were an
executive board member as well as president of that organization.
You were chairperson for the Massachusetts College of Athletics for
Women in the early 1970's. You were also chairperson of the Women's
Physical Education Department at Worcester State College from 1968
to 1981.
You received your M.Ed. degree from Worcester State College in 1959
and have been a professor at Worcester State for 30 years and were
employed by the Worcester Public School System for 10 years. You
also worked at the Worcester State College academic advising center
for 11 years.
You continue to teach in the physical education department at
Worcester State today and you have touched the lives of many
student-athletes, both men and women throughout the years.
Margaret Nugent, it is with great pride that we induct you into the
Worcester State College Athletic Hall of Fame.
