Ice Hockey Shut Out By Salem State

SALEM, Mass. – Sean Cleary (Barnstable, Mass.) made 21 saves and Callum Hofford (Woodbridge, Ontario) scored a pair of goals as Salem State earned a 5-0 shutout over Worcester State in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference action (MASCAC) on Saturday afternoon at Rockett Arena. The Vikings up their record to 5-8-1 and 4-5 in conference while the Lancers, who snap their three-game winning streak, go to 8-6 and 5-4 in the league.

Salem State jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the second. Billy McGwin (Rochester, N.Y.) broke a scoreless tie when he stole the puck deep in the Worcester State zone and fired a shot past goalie Aaron Callan (South Lyon, Mich.) for a 1-0 lead. Less than 20 seconds later Luca Ragosta (Providence, R.I.) set up Landon Hasenfuss (Hanover, Mass.) with a nice feed from behind the net, and a wide open Hasenfuss converted, giving the Vikings a 2-0 lead. Callum Hofford (Woodbridge, Ontario) added the third Vikings' goal just over a minute later on a Salem State power play to open up a 3-0 advantage at the 6:17 mark of the second.

Hofford added his second power play goal of the day late in the third before Billy Falter (Wilmington, Mass.) closed the scoring with a goal at 17:58 to make the final 5-0.

Aaron Callan (South Lyon, Mich.) took the loss, stopping 14 shots for the Lancers, who outshot Salem State 21-19 for the game. Senior Andrew Etheridge (Burrillville, R.I.) and junior Nick Patullo (Doylestown, Pa.) led the Lancers with three shots each in the contest, but were unable to find the back of the net in the loss.

The Lancers will return to the ice on Thursday evening, taking on Anna Maria on the road at 5:40 p.m.
