Barros Leads Men's Outdoor Track To Top Finish At Springfield Invitational

 

Springfield, MA --- Sophomore Jared Barros (Taunton, MA) was a double winner in the 100 meters (11.08) and the 200 meters (22.55) as he helped propel the Worcester State men's outdoor track and field team to first overall at the Springfield Invitational on Saturday.

The Lancers were one of three squads to tally a triple digit total with 156.5 points followed by Williams (117) and Westfield State (112).

Barros qualified for the Open New England Championships while senior Terrence Gibson (Rockland, MA) accomplished the same feat with first place finish in the 110 meter hurdles (15.10). Gibson also added fifth in the 200 (23.12).

Senior Matthew Alley (Milford, MA) clocked second in the 100 (11.30), sophomore Marc George (Framingham, MA/Marion) broke two minutes in the 800 with a time of 1:59.64 and senior Jason Sliwoski (Leicester, MA) took fourth in the 110 meter hurdles (15.94).

In the field, freshman Elijah Mawejje (Woburn, MA) had the best leap in the long jump (21-1.25/6.43m) and fourth in the high jump (6-0/1.83m) as senior Daniel Ross (Foxboro, MA) was the runner-up in the high jump (6-2/1.88m).

Senior Matthew Begley (E. Bridgewater, MA) was second in the long jump (19-5.25/5.92m) and fifth in the discus (126-10/38.65m) while sophomore Sam Weeks (Methuen, MA) registered third in the shot put (45-3/13.79m), third in the discus (142-7/43.46m) and fifth in the hammer (142-10/43.55m).

Senior Mario De Jesus (Lawrence, MA) marked up sixth in the javelin (158-1/48.19m). 

The 4x100 meter relay of junior Adam Scerra (Marlboro, MA), Sliwoski, freshman Brian Johnson (Ashburnham, MA) and sophomore Angel Martinez (Lawrence, MA) notched second overall (45.00) to round out the finishers for the Blue and Gold.

Worcester State will compete at the MASCAC/Alliance Championships next weekend at Fitchburg State.
