Women's Lacrosse Defeated by Western Connecticut

DANBURY, CONN. - Freshman Alexa Riggio (North Massapequa, N.Y.) and sophomore Brianna Pota (East Meadow, N.Y.) each scored three goals as the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team defeated visiting Worcester State University 9-8 at a chilly and windy Westside Athletic Complex on Wednesday night.

With the Colonials trailing 7-3, Pota scored the second of her three goals then Riggio rattled off three straight goals to even the contest at 7-7 with 23:12 still remaining in the game.

Junior attack Caroline Galligan (Marshfield, Mass.) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with 18:37 left in regulation.  Pota then netted her final tally of the night and fourth goal of the season, off a feed from sophomore Dominique DeMarsico (Danbury, Conn.), to cap off six unanswered goals by the hosts.

Freshman Marina Souza (Brewster, N.Y.) added a pair of goals for the winners.

Leading the Lancers, now 2-1, was Lily Gendron's (Lakeville, Mass.) game-high four goals. Rachel Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.) tacked on two goals while Kylie Hill (Lunenburg, Mass.) and Coley Hayes (Norwood, Mass.) each contributed a goal for the visitors.

Junior Jennifer Sawicki (Westbury, N.Y.) was solid in goal for the Colonials, which improve to 2-0 on the young season. She made six saves as the Lancers out-shot WestConn, 23-20 tonight.

Chloe O'Brien (Sturbridge, Mass.) suffered her first loss of the season in net for Worcester State. She made one save and allowed all nine goals before turning over duties to Savanna Rosado (Milford, Mass.) for the final 14 minutes. Rosado made two saves in relief.

WestConn continues its mini home stand this Saturday when it plays host to MIT. The scoreboard starts to roll at 11 a.m. The Lancers welcome St. Lawrence University to Worcester on Saturday for a 1 p.m. tilt.
