Women's Tennis Beaten by Roger WIlliams

HOLDEN, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's tennis team suffered a 7-2 loss to Roger Williams University on Thursday afternoon in non-conference action at Wachusett Regional High School.

With the loss, the Lancers fall to 3-4 overall on the season, while the Hawks improve to 5-3.

The Hawks scooped up the first two points of the day, nabbing victories at first and third doubles. Libby Bennett (Watertown, Conn.) and Samantha Rivkin (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) got the third doubles win for the Hawks, with Heidi Martin (Scituate, Mass.) and Jessica Magliato (New Rochelle, N.Y.) putting the visitors up 2-0.

Freshman Charlotte Mullane (Sterling, Mass.) and sophomore Emma Collings (Marion, Mass.) picked up the lone point for the Lancers in double play, defeating Taryn Roche (Greenlawn, N.Y.) and Riley Spillane (Easton, Mass.) 9-7 at second doubles.

The Hawks put the game to rest once singles play got started, with wins from positions two through six. Roche, playing at second singles, won the clinching match, defeating Worcester State's Monika Mularski (Auburn, Mass.) 6-1, 6-0. Playing from the top position, sophomore Dominique Alves (Ludlow, Mass.) picked up the lone Lancer singles victory on the afternoon, defeating Martin 6-2, 6-3.

The Lancers will be back in action on Saturday, taking to the road to play UMass Boston at 1 p.m. Roger Williams will return to the court the same day, taking on Gordon at noon.
