Lancers Drop Rain Delayed Finale in Florida to Panthers

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Baseball team (1-8, 0-0) faced SUNY-Purchase (5-6, 0-0) on their last day and SUNY's first in Florida, a mirror situation to the Lancers first day when they squared up with Roger Williams on their last day in Florida. Worcester would look to brush off the late inning loss to Amherst yesterday and carry a second win out of Florida.

Final

SUNY-Purchase: 9

Worcester State: 5

How it Happened:

Purchase would start the scoring first with some two run action in the bottom of the first, but an error and a stolen home would return a run to the Lancers in the second. Sophomore Aaron Siegal (Abington, MA) would play the stolen base rundown from first to second to cross the plate. The bottom of the second would send in three more across for the Panthers, but a pitching change that would send in sophomore Jack Pawlich (Rocky Hill, CT) would settle the game down.

The game would see no further scoring action until the top of the fifth when a sophomore Gavin Wells (North Attleboro, MA) double would bring home junior Anthony Iamarone (Providence, RI), but a run down at home would see the attempt, a second run in the inning, cut down as sophomore Joe Auger (Lowell, MA) was tagged out at the plate.

Each team would grab one more run before a quick passing downpour would put the game on an hour delay resulting in a shifting in pitchers and lineups after the break. Worcester came out energized to finish the game and claim the victory before heading home. A home run by Iamarone would send both him and senior Tyler Smith (Leominster, MA) across the plate to cut the Panthers lead down to 2. A further home run in the eighth by Ryan Jewett would put Purchase's lead to only one, but a run riddled bottom would see them claim a four run lead they would hold onto until the close of action.

Pawlich would go 3 innings in the outing, while Samsel would finish out the game with 3.1 innings of action and two strikeouts in what was a very tight zone for the game.

What's Next:

Worcester State now sits at (1-9, 0-0) at the close of their Spring Break travels and will return to the slightly chilled air of central Massachusetts on Monday for a twice rescheduled bout with Wheaton COllege at 7pm at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, MA.
