Lancers Fall Short in Late Comeback Bid

Worcester, MA - The Lancers returned to Coughlin Field Saturday afternoon to take on Massachusetts Maritime in MASCAC action. Despite Worcester State's late push in the 4th Quarter, they were unable to complete the comeback and fell to the Buccaneers. 

 

FINAL SCORE: Worcester 17, Mass Maritime 25

 

Worcester State won the coin toss & differed to the Second Half. The Bucs opened scoring with a 29yd touchdown pass from Marc Murphy to Evan Dyer to put Mass Maritime up 7-0. Worcester State followed with their first drive that resulted in a field goal kick by Sophomore Santiago Rodriguez-D'Atri(Leominster, MA) to make it 7-3. That would be the only time the Lancers would get themselves on the board in the first half. 

 

Junior Quarterback Mike Loveless (Nahua, NH) finished the game with 22 completed passes out of 51 attempts, one touchdown and one interception. Loveless also led the team with 52 rushing yards out of 10 attempts and put them back on the board with a 5yd rushing touchdown early in the 4th. D'Atri's extra point attempt was deflected, keeping the score at 25-9 in favor of the Bucs. 

 

Sophomore Defensive Back Jamison Metcalf (Leicester, MA) forced a fumble late in the 2nd Quarter on a 1st and Goal rush attempt by Mass Maritime's Ja'iel Johnson. That is Metcalf's first fumble recovery of the season. Metcalf also led the team with 60 kickoff return yards, while Mass Maritime's Evan Dyer recorded 46. 

 

Worcester State would see the endzone again late in the 4th Quarter, with a 4yd touchdown pass thrown by Loveless to Sophomore Wide Receiver Drew Von Klock (Walpole, MA). Von Lock also led the Lancers with 72 receiving yards on 5 attempts. A 2-Point Conversion by Sophomore Receiver Deion Osei-Sarpong (Holden, MA) put the score at 25-17 in favor of the Bucs with three minutes to go in the game. The Lancers then attempted an onside kick, which was recovered by Mass Maritime. 

 

Worcester State drops to 1-5 (1-3, MASCAC) on the season, while Mass Maritime improves to 3-3 (3-1, MASCAC). 

 

The Lancers are at home again next Saturday, where they will face the Panthers of Plymouth State in another MASCAC conference matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 12pm.
