As February comes to a close, it is a great time to look back at the month of February, and its role as Black History Month. Black History Month became federally recognized in 1976 in recognition of the successes of the Civil Rights movements in the 1950s and 60s. Negro Week and other pro-black days of remembrance were the predecessors that laid the ground work for this month of reflection, respect and celebration.
Westfield, Mass. — Bridgewater State’s Kylie Grassi and Framingham State’s Gwendolyn Carpenter were named the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Year while Westfield State’s Octaviana Williams was tabbed as Defensive Player of the Year and head up the 2023-24 All-Conference team which is voted on by the seven coaches around the conference.
Worcester, MA- The #5 seed Worcester State Women’s Basketball team (5-20, 4-8) returned to action this evening when they journeyed to Salem State to take on the #4 seeded Vikings (12-13, 5-7) in the first round of the MASCAC playoffs. The Lancers most recently took on Salem on Saturday February 10th, where they were dealt a tough 82-73 loss that split the regular season 1-1 between the two programs.
Worcester, MA- For the 11th time this season, the Worcester State Women?s Basketball team has been awarded the MASCAC Rookie of the week, sweeping the regular season in the category. This week?s awardee received it for the ninth time this season, as Lena Waldron (Quincy, MA) received the honor after a 1-1 week for the Lancers.
Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Women’s Basketball team (4-20, 3-8) traveled to North Adams, MA to play MCLA (4-20, 1-10) in their final conference game of the regular season. The Lancers secured a playoff spot after results went their way on Wednesday and are now playing for final seeding in the tournament. The Lancers are looking to use this game to fine-tune some plays and ideas for success in the upcoming MASCAC conference tournament.
Worcester, MA - The Worcester State Lancers (4-19, 3-7 MASCAC) tipped off against the Framingham State Rams (20-2, 9-1 MASCAC). This game marks Worcester State’s senior night, celebrating our Lancer seniors and most importantly, the leaders of the women’s basketball team. The seniors playing for the Lancers include Katie Hurynowicz (Tyngsboro, MA), Chloe LaPierre (Plainfield, CT), and Nyah Thomas (Attleboro, MA) as well as team manager Jordyn Trombly.
Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Women’s Basketball team continues their Rookie of the Week dominance as first year Lena Waldron (Quincy, MA) has been named MASCAC Rookie of the Week for the eighth time this season.
Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Lancers (4-18, 3-6 MASCAC) tipped off against the Salem State Vikings (10-12, 3-6 MASCAC) for the team’s penultimate conference home game.
This game marks the team’s annual “Pink Out” game. Worcester State University, the Worcester State Athletics Department, and the Rosen Cancer Awareness Fund have teamed up to raise awareness for cancer detection and research. The Rosen Cancer Awareness Fund, created by alumni couple Gregg Rosen ’86 and Pam Rosen ’87, provides robust programming that supports peer-to-peer education regarding early cancer detection.
Earlier in the morning the Women’s Basketball game held their annual Alumni Game as former Lancers returned to the court for a friendly scrimmage.

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Lancers (4-16, 3-4) travel over to the Woodward center to take on the Westfield State Owls (12-9, 5-3) looking to improve their win streak to 3 games and get the even 500 conference record against the Owls who claimed the victory over them in a earlier game this season 78-64.
Westfield, MA — A total of 1,390 student-athletes have been honored by the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference with selection
to the league’s Fall/Winter 2023 All-Academic team that was released earlier today by Commissioner Angela Baumann.
Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Lancers (3-16, 2-4 MASCAC) tipped off against the Fitchburg State Falcons (5-14, 2-5 MASCAC) and looked to carry their momentum from a big conference win last week versus MCLA in their grudge match versus the Falcons who claimed a nail biter earlier in the season 81-77.
Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Lancers (2-16, 1-4 MASCAC) tipped off against the MCLA Trailblazers (4-14, 1-4 MASCAC) in the team’s sixth conference game of the season.
Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Women’s Basketball team swept the MASCAC weekly awards this week, grabbing both the Player and Rookie of the Week honors. Senior Katie Hurynowicz (Tyngsboro, MA) was tabbed with her first player of the week honor of the year, while first year Lena Waldron (Quincy, MA) grabbed her 6th MASCAC Rookie of the Week honors.
Worcester, MA- The Lancers Women’s Basketball team (2-15, 1-3) traveled to Framingham to continue their conference campaign. An impressive away win against Salem State was carrying the Worcester momentum into the afternoon battle with the Rams. The Lancers are looking for their third win and first winning streak to start as Framingham State comes into the match with a 14-2 record to add another level to the challenge.
Worcester, MA- The Lancers Women’s Basketball team (1-15, 0-3) enter today's contest against Salem State with a 1-15 record, with a number of hotly contested battles under their belts. The team came into the night looking to grab their second win and their first conference win on the season. This young team combined with a couple of savvy veterans has had a hard stretch, but are primed to begin their roll in the conference. Salem State came into the match with a 7-8 record and their last match was a dominant 20 point win over MCLA.
Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Women’s Basketball team again walked away with rookie of the week honors, claiming their sixth of the season, as first year Lena Waldron was named Rookie of the Week for the 5th time this season.
Worcester, MA- In the final game of Winter Break the Worcester State Women’s Basketball team (1-14, 0-2) hosted the 2023 MASCAC Champions Bridgewater State at Brissette Court. After some early bus trouble for the Bears delayed the start, the Lancers were hoping the unexpected shift would give them a leg up to grab win number one in the conference.

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Lancers (1-13, 0-1 MASCAC) tipped off against conference foe Westfield State (8-7, 1-1 MASCAC) this evening in the team’s second conference game of the season.
Worcester, MA- The Worcester State University Women’s basketball team hosted the 14th annual Math madness game versus the Trinity College Bantams, who have been receiving national ranking votes all season, on Tuesday afternoon. Worcester State welcomed over 600 students from Tatnuck Magnet, Chandler Magnet and May Street School to Brissette Court for a competitive game of basketball and math. The Lancers kept it close for a majority of the game before the bantams were able to come away with the 70-47 victory.
Worcester, MA- With the return of MASCAC play this past Saturday, the Worcester Women’s Basketball team was again honored with a Rookie of the Week selection. For the fourth time this season, Lena Waldron (Quincy, MA) has been selected for the honor.

WORCESTER, Mass. - Worcester State University Women’s Basketball will host its 14th Annual Math Madness game next Monday, January 8 as the Lancers host the Trinity College Bantams in non-conference action at John P. Brissette Court. Tip-off is scheduled for 12 p.m.
Worcester, MA- After a Winter Break swing of games down in Georgia, the Worcester State Women’s basketball team have once again claimed the MASCAC Rookie of the Week Honors as first year Alana Smith (Chicopee, MA) claimed this week’s honors.
Worcester, MA- The Lancers returned to action in Georgia as the Worcester State Women’s Basketball team wrapped up their holiday trip with a match versus the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels. The Women’s Basketball team was coming of a tough loss yesterday versus Piedmont and was looking for their first win of their trip.
Worcester, MA- After nearly three weeks since their last game, the Worcester State Women’s Basketball team returned to the court this afternoon to take on the Piedmont Lions down in Demorest, GA. This is the first of a two game Georgia swing for the Lancers, who have traveled south this year for their annual holiday team trip.

Worcester, MA- For the third time this season Worcester State’s Women’s Basketball’s Lena Waldron (Quincy, MA) has been tabbed as the MASCAC Rookie of the Week. She has been selected Rookie of the Week for the conference each week, minus one so far on the young season.
