Over the course of the summer, Worcester State University Athletics will roll out its top moments of the decade, as the door has now closed on the 2010s.
We start our Moments of the Decade by celebrating all of Worcester State’s All-Americans from the 2010s! Sixteen Worcester State student-athletes, representing six teams, combined to win 26 All-America awards in the decade.
Men’s track & field led the charge, with four athletes combining to win nine All-America honors. The team was also responsible for all three of Worcester State’s national championships in the decade. Terrence Gibson won the 2013 national championship in the 60-meter hurdles, and Justin Lewis won consecutive national championships in the outdoor high jump in 2017 and 2018, all which carried automatic All-America recognition.
Gibson also received All-America honors in the 2013 110-meter hurdles, the 2014 60-meter hurdles, and the 2015 110-meter hurdles, while Lewis was an All-American in the 2018 indoor high jump. Throwers Sam Weeks and Marcus Vieira each won All-America awards as well, in the 2017 discus and 2018 weight throw respectively.
Football finished with the second most All-America awards in the decade, with three athletes splitting six awards. Jacob Maher joined Gibson as the only athletes with four awards, winning three separate All-America honors in 2017 and another in 2018. In 2012, Graham Asum was a D3football.com Third Team All-American, while Bryan Narcisse was a 2014 D3football.com All-America Honorable Mention.
Four members of the Worcester State women’s track & field program claimed All-America honors in the decade, tying with men’s track & field for most All-American athletes. Briana Wise was the first honoree, collecting the award in the 200-meter dash in 2012. In 2014, Alyssa Jasper was an All-American in the heptathlon, with Christy Deininger receiving the honor in the 100-meter hurdles. Stephanie McFadries earned the program’s most recent All-American selection in the 2017 javelin throw.
The only team that received its program’s first ever All-America honors in the 2010s was Worcester State field hockey. Michaila Parent and Hayley Sutherland made history in 2017 when both were named to Synapse Sports All-Americans, the first field hockey All-Americans in program history. Parent was also named a Longstreth/NFHCA Third Team All-American the same year. Worcester State’s most recent honoree is Rachel Hopkins, who won Longstreth/NFHCA and Synapse Sports All-American awards in 2019.
The first All-American selection received by the Lancers in the decade was awarded to Bob Bruso of men’s golf. Bruso was a 2010 Golf Coaches Association of America Third Team All-American. Baseball’s Corey McDonald followed Bruso a year later when he was named a D3baseball.com All-America Honorable Mention.
