WESTFIELD, Mass. - Three Worcester State University student-athletes have received weekly recognition from the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference. The announcements came from the league office on Monday afternoon.
Sophomore Odelia Konadu (Worcester, Mass.) of the Worcester State women's outdoor track & field team was named the MASCAC Field Athlete of the Week and Rookie of the Week. Konadu inserted herself right into the national picture with an impressive heave to win the shot put at the BSU Bears Invitational. Her toss of 11.95 meters won her the event by nearly two and a half meters, and ranks 33rd in Division III. She also placed fourth in the discuss throw at 26.19 meters at the meet.
Senior Sean Mahan (Woburn, Mass.) was named the MASCAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week after a strong outing to help the Lancers to a 2-0 start. Mahan threw five scoreless innings for Worcester State en route to a season-opening 3-0 shutout of Bridgewater State University on Saturday. He allowed just three hits in the contest while striking out five along with a runner caught stealing to earn the victory.
Senior Chloe O'Brien (Sturbridge, Mass.) rounded out Worcester State's honorees by being named MASCAC Women's Lacrosse Co-Player of the Week. O'Brien was stellar in net for the Lancers this week, recording a pair of wins over Bridgewater State. She opened the week with an eight-save outing in a 10-7 win on Friday, before turning aside nine shots, including one in the extra session, in an overtime win on Sunday. O'Brien finished the week with a goals against average of 7.72 and a save percentage of 51.5. Entering the week, Worcester State women's lacrosse had never before beaten Bridgewater State in 22 previous meetings.
